SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Two Springfield men were convicted today in federal court of illegal gambling and money laundering.

United States Attorney Michael J. Sullivan; Kenneth W. Kaiser, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New England; and Colonel Thomas G. Robbins, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, announced today that JOHN PITEO, age 45, of Springfield, and JOHN BURRITT, age 37, also of Springfield, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Michael A. Ponsor to participating in an illegal gambling business, money laundering and use of interstate communications in furtherance of the illegal gambling business.

At today's plea hearing, the prosecutor told the Court that, had the case proceeded to trial, the Government's evidence would have proven that between 1995 and 1998 PITEO and BURRITT operated a large-scale sports bookmaking business which used the proceeds of the gambling business to pay the salaries of bookmakers and winning wagers in violation of the money laundering statute. In addition, PITEO used interstate telephone calls and facsimile transmissions as well as interstate shipments by Federal Express to transport money and gambling records between Florida and Massachusetts.

Judge Ponsor scheduled sentencing for February 10, 2005 for BURRITT and February 11, 2005 for PITEO. Each of the defendants faces up to 5 years' imprisonment, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release, and a $500,000 fine.

The case was investigated by the Massachusetts State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd E. Newhouse in Sullivan's Springfield Office.
