Isn't Sports Betting basically like betting on Stocks?

Only the playing field is a lil different...

Peteep:

I started off buying stocks for "short term trades". Then I fell in love with selling stocks short. Then I fell in love with buying options. Then I fell in love with selling options short (now that's gambling). Then I realized that betting sports was much more exicting and a lot faster than waiting for the 3rd Friday of everymonth. Plus I'm a lot better at sports than playing stocks, but that really isn't saying much.

Peace

i don't play the stock market...i invest for the long term....edward jones is a good start...for making good sound investments...for the long term investor...like myself....they have something called american legacy that is going through the roof and has been for about the last 15 years....american funds are also something to look into....any roth ira is a good thing...no taxes when you hit that magic number....also fidelity is where my 401k is located and they also have good things going on, as well...i'm 47 and with what i have invested it is earning about an average of 11% per year....i know there are better things to invest in...but 11% year in and out is pretty solid....should be close to mill in 10 to 15 years...and guess what i'll be 62 at that time.....:dancefool

you're right, i am a smart-ass sometimes. just foolin' around.

actually, imo, the market should be very strong the next six months. i'd invest in mutual funds...tech funds and large cap funds.

Put the bulk 75% in SPY. 10% in QQQ. 5% in EWJ and 5% in EWS. Put the other 5% in a real estate fund and you are set. Just like a mutual fund but less fees. Using these index shares you will have shares in over 1000 stocks with a nice hedge against a severe market decline. And DON'T buy these on margin.

know yourself

Start off, as with betting sports, by knowing yourself. Do you want day trading with all the shocks that can produce? Or do you want long term returns? Or somewhere in between?

Personally I haven't got the time to day trade. So I follow a value based, Buffet style approach. I hold between 8 and 15 stocks at any time and trade on average 7 or 8 times a year. Some stocks are core holdings and will never be sold unless they are badly mismanaged at some point.

It's boring but it's reliable. I started 8 years ago and have beat the market in 7 of them, on average by 6%. By taking slightly less risk than the market. I spend about 30 minutes a week on my stocks on average, mostly 0 minutes then a week or 2 of 1 hour or so when I am thinking of a trade or 2.

Much of my outperformance comes from paying hardly any dealing fees because I pick good stocks and rarely need to sell them. I'm not likely to be in the next Microsoft. But I am even less likely to be in the next Worldcom.

This may suit you, or it may not be exciting enough. Only you can decide what approach to take, there are many which work.

Buy in November and sell in May..

Oddly enough this simple method outperforms buy and hold by many times.
