It's being reported that Spurrier has agreed in principal to the head coaching position for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

FLA/SC game takes on new meaning and you can add the gamecocks now as an SEC power. Within 3 years they'll be competining at the top of the national scene as well. Good to have The Visor back on sidelines in the fall.

Steve Spurrier has agreed in principle to become the next coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks should Lou Holtz step down at the end of the season the Tennessean reports.

An announcement is expected early next week.

When contacted by the paper, South Carolina Associate Athletics Director Kerry Tharp would neither confirm nor deny that a deal was imminent.

'We're not going to comment about any of it right now,' Tharp said. 'It's all speculative. When Coach Holtz decides what he's going to do, then we'll decide where we're going to go with it.'

Spurrier coached the Florida Gators to six Southeastern Conference championships and the 1996 national title.

He posted 122 victories over 12 seasons at Florida and tormented opponents with his offensive flair and witty one-liners, and left town with the best winning percentage in league history, stepping down for a disastrous two-year stint in the pros with the Washington Redskins.

The reason why Spurrier was and is going to be succesful again in the SEC is that all of these SEC schools go out and recruit all of these playmakers and all this speed and then they come out and play smash-mouth football. It's one of the most confusing things I've ever seen.

Spurrier on the other hand... Went out and recruited playmakers and speed and actually played to those players strengths. The rest of the SEC was at a loss as to how to defend it 90% of the time.

Big Spurrier fan and I hope he wins another National Title @ SC... But not at the Gators expense :D

Glad to see spurrier is coming back, but wish it had been at Florida....just seemed like the timing was perfect for the prodigal son to return home...

But he will definitely make an impact within a couple years.........

Should be interesting...

If this story is true, the Gamecock faithful better be prepared to be patient (they usually are not) while Spurrier installs his "fun-n-gun" system in Columbia. There are not nearly enough players on the current roster that are well-equipped to adapt to Spurrier's game.

Depending on their non-conference schedule, it may even take a couple of years for a Spurrier coached SC team to get to "bowl eligible" status. Not to mention the obvious, that South Carolina pales in comparison to Florida as a breeding ground for Division I football players.

Will certainly make for interesting times in the SEC, as well as sleepless nights for coaches from Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, etc.

Gamecocks Want To Keep 'Greatest Year' Going

POSTED: 10:54 am EST November 16, 2010
UPDATED: 11:51 am EST November 16, 2010

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- David Cloninger, GamecockCentral.com
Perhaps it's a bit premature, but some are already calling 2010 the greatest year in South Carolina athletic history. After a baseball national championship and the football team winning its first SEC East championship over the weekend, the giddy exuberance of Gamecock fans has spilled throughout Columbia.
The football team dethroned No. 1 Alabama on Oct. 9.
USC won its first major national title over the summer, and the football team clinched a division title three days ago.
