2:07 am today, a 6.2 earthquake hit Costa Rica. There have been 79 repilicas through 6:30 am........ many places have no electricity, some roads have been ripped opened, houses destroyed and several people killed are the outcome....

Ive been through a 6.6 and a 7.4 before but last nights quake was special... the previous ones have been shaking from side to side with oscillating movements, last nights was like grabbing someone and shaking them furiously up and down and slightly to the sides.....

Will post pics when they are available....

Ironically, we are hosting a meeting of many latin american presidents right now so they were all here for the rude awakening...

8 kms northeast of Quepos, the depth of the quake was only 18 kms... (for those not aware, how strong a quake is felt varies according to both size and how deep the thing occurs, in this case 18 kms is not very deep, which makes the quake feel awhole lot stronger for those caught in it...

Earthquake magnitudes are hard to use as reference points, mainly because the devastation is affected by many many factors (quality of construction, location of epicenter vrs heavily populated areas etc)

1972 Nicaragua earthquake was 6.2 and had a death toll of about 5k people

Costa Rica thankfully hasn't had any recent major earthquakes with epicenters close to San Jose, Cartago etc.

I guess Colombia had a 7.2 earthquake last Monday.

Here's a map of earthquakes in North and Central America. Click on the square on Costa Rica for more details.

Do the sportsbooks have redundant servers in other countries, just in case an earthquake destroys their data center in Costa Rica?

Is it possible that a sportsbook could lose all of their account information, etc. due to an earthquake?

Lose information? Extremely unlikely. Be put out of service for awhile due to lack of power and chaos preventing workers getting to the offices? Much more of a possibility unfortunately.
