That is flat out wrong and anyone with half a brain who writes these articles should know that just because some team is ranked ahead of another doesn't mean they should win!

Especially in college hoops...the rankings there are the most meaningless of all since they have the tournament at the end of the year, they might as well not rank them during the season, since it means jack nothing.

Anyway, i have seen this today and its bugged me forever, especially considering Illinois and Gonzaga were both FAVORITES in their

I see this all the time and just laugh. It's too bad these people don't bet on sports. One would think they'd at least peruse the lines ocassionally so they knew what was really going on. Many in the media do know, but some are just hopelessly cleuless.

it used to get me upset, too

then i realized 99% of the media covering sports is CLUELESS about the point spread and whenever a higher seeded team loses it MUST be an upset - even if the higher seeded team is a dog

like west va. was +4 @ villanova - yet watch how many people call it an upset.

i no longer let it bother me because i realize how stupid and clueless most people are

The old home/away scenario should have some meaning. #9 "upsets" #8 , on their home court, not an upset.

I would argue though the media is 1000% more savvy about the spreads today. There are guys more than willing to speak about it, even during the games. That was a definite no-no a long time ago. Imagine if Madden wasn't in the booth, Al Michaels would be openly discussing the spread instead of his current "clues" to keep the betting-hater Madden happy. Instead you have to hear Brent Musberger on radio instead, he mentions the spread almost as often as the score it seems. "The Lakers, favored by seven tonight, lead it by three".

What's the difference ? Lakers favored by "7". Not everybody has "7". that may be opening or closing line, There are likely bets ranging from 6 to 8. Actually good, IMO announcer acknowledges money is being bet on game, making it more mainstream. Lines move.

A big false fat lie that there is one number on the game, maybe a rare 3 in NFL, but juice moves. Few games remain totally stagnant, maybe some NBA, but most games move enough to a point that you could middle the crap out of best and worst lines, if you could predict the peaks and valleys in them.

I heard Musberger say that Illinois was favored by 16 four times during the Mizzou game. Steve Lavin just ignored the comments, cause I'm sure he's anti-gambling, being a coach. Watching the Tampa Bay-Arizona game on Sunday, it was pretty obvious the play-by-play guy had Tampa +3, cause he sounded completely deflated when Tampa threw that last interception.

The FIGHTING ILLINI may be the best team in the country quite frankly.

I remember several times in the ACC. I think North Carolina is going to be the team to beat this year. I think they for real, you can throw that opening game loss to Santa Clara away, well coached team.

I went to the game last night. Played terrible the first half, while Ohio St played great basketball. Still won by 19 against a very good team. In the one and done format of the tournament, anything can happen. But we're a unanimous #1.

Hawkeye171 and my nephew watched the game at a local watering hole(along with the Iowa debacle).

Hope the Illini can win it all, they are the only Big Ten school with a chance.
