Italy 3rd Largest Gambling Market In The World

Rome, Dec. 2 - The Italian gambling scene takes third place in the world, behind Great Britain and Japan. The estimate was given by the autonomous administration of the State Monopoly. The growth rate of the Italian market was quite high between last year and the current year, allowing Italy to pass from sixth to third place in the world ranking, beating out California and Nevada. As explained by the general director of the State Monopoly, Giorgio Tino, this result is even more "important if one considers that the state levy in Italy is much higher than the European average, which does not reach 14 percent. In Italy, taxes on winnings were 22 percent in 2003, even without considering the taxes in favour of the Olympic committee and Unire, and it will be higher in 2004."

"Anti-mafia police are investigating 12 Italian soccer clubs in a probe into suspected match-fixing.

"Serie A club Siena said in a statement that police had visited their offices as part of investigations being directed by an anti-mafia unit in Naples.

I can understand, esp if they're talking per capita, and even if not-- because almost all the betting handle is legal / counted, unlike here. In those countries they can bet on anything in just about any part of the country-- hard to walk a block in the big cities without passing a bet outlet-- whether shop or bar--, no internet restrictions province vs province / track vs track, in home TV set top wagering, ditto cellphone... AND just about everyone gambles: there's practically no gambling / drinking is evil bs there. Their equivalents of our of pik6/superfectas, which are done with sports also, are national passions over there...

Obviously the USA is in the top 3 (number 1 of course). Notice the article said Italy passed up Nevada and California. So for some reason they are treating each state as a separate entity. If they combined all US states it would obviously be in the top 3 , surely #1.

is you are computing mass population, then you're correct.
but, by culture, look ej: UK there is a betting shop in every corner.

i have not seen any other sick culture for gambling
that the asians. for example take a look in any sportsbook
sheet how the NGUYENS or any other ASIAN actions is..

maybe they're not high rollers, but they bet every minute
they sell their mother to make a bet.
