The Jockey Club Brasileiro, which operates Hipodromo La Gavea in Rio de Janeiro, announced on Monday a resolution to suspend jockeys Alex Mota, Jorge Leme, Acedenir Gulart, Marcos Aurelio, and Cesar Gustavo Neto for one year after discovering irregularities involving all five legs of that track’s Quinexata wager on November 19.
Following an extensive investigation, it was found that the jockeys—who rank third, fifth, seventh, tenth, and 18th, respectively, in La Gavea standings—had combined to invest approximately $738 on the card’s Quinexata wager, which consists of correctly picking the top two finishers of the final five races. The potential payout for a successful wager could have been as as much as $144,000.
After proving their participation in the race-fixing and gambling scheme scandal, the Jockey Club gave all five riders a one-year sanction for an infraction of article 41, letter "C" of the National Code of Racing, which prohibits professionals from placing wagers.
Mota, Leme, and Aurelio each received an additional six-month suspension for failing to make an effort for an entire race.
The wager placed by the five riders did not go exactly as planned as they failed to include the runner-up in the last leg of their Quinexata ticket, which paid only about $1,328. The Jockey Club Brasileiro racing commission announced that it would extend its investigation another 15 days. At its conclusion, the police will be called in to proceed with the legal aspects of the investigation as foreseen in article 138 of the National Code of Racing.—Michael Burns
