In case any of you were seriously thinking about placing a wager on FERENTZ taking the ND job, perhaps I can elighten you and save you money.

FERENTZ signed a NEW contract over two weeks ago with the HAWKEYES.....................................

Iowa City, Ia. - When Kirk Ferentz signed his first college football coaching contract decades ago, he plopped his name on a $28,000 deal and grinned as he drove off in his silver Malibu with more miles than he had dollars.

"I thought I was in heaven," he said.

On Tuesday, Ferentz made $25,000 alone for being named Big Ten Conference coach of the year, hours before Iowa announced a new contract that guarantees him at least $1.6 million per year through 2012.

The new deal, pays Ferentz $1.2 million in base salary each year with an annual longevity bonus of $400,000.

"We obviously are paying a lot of money," said Bob Bowlsby, Iowa's athletic director. "And I consider it a terrific bargain."

Ferentz, 49, turned a bumpy start to his sixth year at Iowa into one of the top stories of the college season.

The Hawkeyes started out 2-2 - including a 44-7 loss at Arizona State - before winning seven consecutive games. The turnaround launched Iowa into the Jan. 1 Capital One Bowl, a third straight post-New Year's bowl trip.

The turnaround is especially remarkable considering Iowa is led by a third starting quarterback in three seasons, the running back corps was decimated by injury and graduations included NFL players Robert Gallery, Bob Sanders and Nate Kaeding.

"I promise you," said Ferentz, rewinding to the 2-2 start, "none of us were predicting 9-2 if you'd made us take some truth serum about a month ago or two months ago."

Ferentz, the 2002 national coach of the year, was named the Big Ten's top coach for the second time in three seasons as Iowa has won 22 of its past 26 Big Ten games.

The new contract for Ferentz was signed on Oct. 29, but Bowlsby said the coach and the university wanted to wait to announce the deal until the regular season was complete to avoid a possible distraction.

"Obviously, things have gone very well during that three weeks, but it wouldn't have made any difference to me," Bowlsby said. "He's the right guy for Iowa, whether we're 6-5 or 9-2."

Ferentz's new contract replaces a six-year deal signed in 2003, which guaranteed $982,800 per year as well as a total of $1.6 million in longevity bonuses.

The new annual incentive bonus schedule also provides higher compensation based on the performance of the team. For example, a top 25 finish for the Hawkeyes will now provide Ferentz with a $100,000 bonus, up from $50,000. An outright Big Ten Conference title will result in a $175,000 bonus, up from $125,000. A shared Big Ten title still nets $100,000.

Iowa officials hope the contract at least slows the constant whispers about Ferentz defecting to the NFL, where he worked as an offensive line coach for Baltimore and Cleveland.

Indianapolis and Jacksonville were among NFL teams to chase Ferentz, who admitted seriously considering past offers - but being firm in his current commitment to Iowa.

"If that's what I wanted to do, I wouldn't be here today," Ferentz said. "I've had my opportunities - several. If it was all about money, and that's the No. 1 attraction of the NFL I think, then that's where I'd be right now.

"To me, it's more about lifestyle. And I really enjoy the lifestyle I have right now as a college football coach."

Ferentz ensured the lifestyle of his assistant coaches improved, as well.

The contract includes $175,000 annually to be distributed by Ferentz among his staff of nine assistants and two strength and conditioning coaches. Assistants also will receive an 8 percent pay bump after any season the team plays in a bowl game and achieves a team graduation rate of 55 percent or higher on the most current four-year report.

Assistant raises also will increase based on the team's final ranking each season - 1 percent for top 25 up to 7 percent more for top 5.

The new contract also stipulates that the financial arrangements for all involved will not be renegotiated within three years of this deal.

Ferentz, the former $28,000 fledgling coach, said his situation at Iowa is loaded with more positives than just money.

"The only negative I can throw out, maybe, is the weather - and other recruiters do that all the time," Ferentz said. "But if that's about all you can talk about - that's why they make winter coats."

Iowa has lineman that bench press 30ft logs

They remind me of tough lumberjacks that are strong as oxes so they win

Iowa IS A BETTER JOB right now ...

not even close

Ferentz is looking at a potential Top 5 recruiting class with 2 yrs for Tate to run the show ... Ferentz has built up Iowa with a solid rep for sending Offv Linemen to the NFL ....

Great base of support as Hawks fans are as loyal as any program in the country ... they are upgrading Kinnick Stadium and Tate will be a serious contender for Heisman honors in the next 2 yrs

One of the Top cbs in the country looks like he has blown off ND for the Hawks .. they have signed a stud qb out of Illinois .. they beat out USC for one of the top LBs in the country out of Ohio ... have a possible committment coming this week out of Dallas in an all-american wide receiver ... Ferentz has one of the best coaching staffs in the country and is building Iowa into a program that will allow him to pick and choose any program in the country should he decide that day comes

Iowa is THE BETTER PROGRAM right now

I agree... Ferentz would be crazy to take the job. However... The "extension" in college sports is the most meaningless contract of all time. Time and time again it's proved to mean absolutely nothing.

Meyer also said weeks ago that he has NO plans of leaving for Florida.

But Ferentz makes as much as Notre Dame is willing to pay a coach so it doesn't really matter. He's not going there. His next job will be in the NFL. That day IS coming Fish.

I'd bet on him to be in Cleveland next year.
I am fairly close to the IOWA program.........and would doubt he is going anywhere for at LEAST the next 5 years.........for many reasons.

1. GREAT RECRUITS coming in as noted, including the #1 QB in the nation.

2. He LOVES Iowa.

3. He has a family that he doesnt want to move anywhere, including another son that will be part of the IOWA program in a few years(he has a son that is currently a starting OL on the team).

4. He has spent time in the NFL ranks and prefers college much better.

5. The new contract as mentioned above.

HAS I HAVE SAID ON THIS FORUM FOR A LONG TIME, THE ONLY JOB I SEE HIM EVEN POSSIBLY CONSIDERING IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS IS THE PENN STATE JOB AS THE SUCCESSOR TO HIS IDOL, JOE PATERNO.

Iowa is the Big 10 team with the most upside in the next 5-10 yrs...
They are?

This is a team, if they defeat LSU, will have had three consecutive 10 game winning seasons in a row.

How much upside is there?

How many teams in the country have won 10 games or more in each of the last 3 seasons?

Not many off the top of my head.

Why would anyone leave a college job where they've got lots of money, lots of support, and basically a lifetime contract? I'm still trying to figure out why Bill Self left Illinois. It's hard to beat the situation that Ferentz has at Iowa, and I believe that he will stay for a long, long time. I know I would.

And if you're lucky... Zook will stay @ Illinois for a long time.

After the way he was treated @ UF he'll probably be more than happy to stay somewhere where they appreciate him.

I get better odds on me nailing Paris Hilton than Ferentz taking the Penn State job ...

Ferentz has to love this situation .... Nebraska, K State, Notre Dame, Illinois, Indiana & Missouri ... right now Iowa is the program that has to have the most appeal for kids in this sector of this country ... plus, big stud TE looks like he is gonna commit shortly from the state of Texas from Tates hometown ... big stud Lineman named Doering looks like he is pulling out of his Nebraska committment and appears to be ready to become a Hawkeye

Things looking good for Iowa fans ...

If Ferentz stays @ Iowa for 5 years the folks in Iowa City probably have a national championship to brag about.

Illini football fans are easy. Just compete every year while we wait for basketball to start, that's all we ask. A Big Ten title is a dream season. He'll have lots of support, and I hope he stays for a long time.

Iowa has no shot in the big 10 next year and if anyone would like to place a wager that they finish in the top 2 of the big 10, id love to make it.

I think most would have predicted the same thing the last two years, and look what happened.

IOWA QB recruit Jake Christenson........

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR bgColor=#dddddd><TD>Jake Christensen is the real deal. He's just a really good quarterback that can do so many different things. It's hard to get to him because he's so smart with the ball, and he's also much more mobile than I thought. He also has some great receivers, and those guys just catch everything. I have to give him his props, because he's as good as advertised." -Bolingbrook 4 star ranked Ryan Bain</TD></TR><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD>"I've been coaching for 33 years, and you're one of the best quarterbacks I've ever seen. "That's something he's going to do a lot of all year. There's nothing that he gonna do that surprises me. He made a play tonight that just makes your jaw drop (Christensen rolled right, escaped a heavy pass rush, rolled left and then fired a 50 yard TD pass on the run). It makes you as a fan just ticked pink to know that he's playing for your team, and he's just a joy to watch on the field each week."" -Lockport coach Bret Kooi</TD></TR><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD>"I've seen a lot of good quarterbacks over the years, and I'm not checking out the players in Florida or California at all, but I feel that Jake has the ability and the potential to be as good as those guys are. Jake is a very talented player and athlete and his best football is still way ahead of him." -Lockport coach Bret Kooi</TD></TR><TR bgColor=#dddddd><TD>"We are looking for three main aspects: good people, a program that Jake will be comfortable in and stability in the coaching staff." -Lockport assistant coach Jeff Christensen</TD></TR><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD>"It’s like the only things I’ve cared about are school and football.
