December 6, 2004 -- A young mortgage broker who was executed on a Long Island street was also a bookie who had more than $18,000 in gambling debts, The Post has learned.
Nassau County cops yesterday refused to say whether the brazen murder of former high-school wrestling star Robert Calabrese, 24, Friday night was linked to his gambling lifestyle, which was detailed by sources. But police did reveal that they have seized potentially crucial videotapes from surveillance cameras on commercial buildings near the murder scene at Broadway and Georgia Avenue in North Long Beach.

Calabrese, the son of an ex-cop, was shot three times in the back of the head at around 8:39 p.m. Friday as he was crossing the street with three or four men believed to be from Suffolk County.

Sources said Calabrese struggled with at least one of the men before he was shot, apparently by a member of the group. "What circumstances led to this? I can't answer, but it was a very vicious event," Farrell said.

Farrell said Calabrese "had a large circle of friends" who were helping the investigation. One has told cops whom Calabrese planned to meet the night he was killed, a pal told The Post.
