While writing for mostly magazines, I am restricted by what I can say about the brick and mortar casinos because it may affect the advertisers. Here at The Rx, I can voice my opinion without the worry of a casino executive ratting me out to my editor.

An excerpt:

Statistics from the Census Bureau and elsewhere expose the dark underbelly of Atlantic City. Will the casino cheerleaders tell anyone that the crime rate in Atlantic City is still triple that of the average New Jersey town? Will they tell anyone that NJ ranks No. 3 in suicides and bankruptcies (Nevada is No. 1 in suicides and No. 2 in bankruptcies) and that New Jersey is No. 2 in gambling addiction right behind Nevada? Did you know that Atlantic City also has a 12 percent unemployment rate (almost triple the states average)?

I've been saying it forever but the state needs to start giving a (you-know-what) about the conditions of the town and the area. Instead of sitting back and reaping the profits by ignoring the problem they should turn around and put some of that back into cleaning up that disaster that is today's AC.

I think the casinos should do their part as well...but I know that's crazy talk anymore. The people won't stop going so the casinos won't stop making money so there is no reason for the state officials to care which is a shame.

CLEAN IT UP AC! You want it to be the Vegas of the Eastern Seaboard? Well make an effort to make it a vacation destination that people would actually want to visit (and legalize sports betting) and you just might benefit.

:suomi: I hate being so animated about it but it is just sad.
