I have done some research for you regarding which NBA game to buy for PS2. I bought espn 2k5 today and it is quite good. I can't run my offense whatsoever as it stands right now. I just finished playing a very humbling contest against the Houston Rockets. Bobby Sura was lighting me up like a Christmas tree. However, the presentation and gameplay seems adequate. I haven't unlocked the secret "run into the stands and punch the spectators" feature, but I trust I will find it in due time.
Also, if you recall, my PS2 looked like crap on my new HDTV but after speaking to a qualified rep at best buy, I was able to get a component video cable that has solved the problem. He also said it's fine to play on a big screen as long as it's not an old projection tv. I must say I am please with the picture.
