Greetings RX crew. I've been to vegas a number of times and of course I relish it. I am thinking of going to Reno though just to change things up a bit. I noticed the accomodations are even cheaper than Vegas. Anyone have any advice? Is Reno worth going to? Is there a nightlife? Do you get free drinks at the tables like you do in Vegas? Is the gambling district safe like the Strip in Vegas, or is it dangerous? Are the casinos open 24/7? Thanks!

Don't kid yourself. Reno is cheap and at this time of year COLD. A co-worker in the office there I used to work in told me last week when she was getting into the car to go to work her very accurate thermometer had readings between 2 and 4 degrees!

Reno is a bargain compared to Vegas, but you get what you pay for. If you are going purely to gamble, then Reno can take care of you. If you want anything else you will be sadly disappointed. Tahoe is a better choice for vacation time, but a hassle to deal with at this time of year unless you are heading to the slopes as well and willing to put chains on a car or take a good 4X4.

As for the 24/7 question, the law pretty much forces all casinos to be open 24 hours. Just about every casino in the state is open all the time, but certainly much quieter late at night in Reno than in Vegas.

Reno is a piece of crap...my father in law lives there. Trust me, not worth going. Only thing good about Reno is it is 40 minutes from Lake Tahoe.

Why is it a piece of crap? What specifically is wrong with it?

Are there decent clubs? Modern casinos? Modern sportsbooks?

If you do hit Reno, do yourself a favor and stay at Atlantis, or at least the Peppermill. You will be disappointed with Downtown, that I can assure you. Downtown is quiet this time of year to the point of being scary, not that you would want to walk outside anyways at night when it is cold.

There are very modest clubs, nothing like Vegas. A couple places Downtown are fairly modern, but nothing like Vegas. If you go expecting anything like Vegas you will be so sorely disappointed, I can't stress this enough. Don't make your point of comparison Vegas, that is a huge mistake. If you come from a place with no casinos and want to gamble, you probably can find fun for a couple of days. But it is truly just a gambling town and nothing else. Trust me on this, I was stuck there two years, I can tell you all you want to know and it ain't a pretty picture.

Decent clubs? I don't go to the clubs so I would not know about that. Modern casino's...some are O.K., but most are just old and not that well kept. The sportsbooks I saw were nothing like vegas. Most have small seating area and small T.V.s. Not anything like vegas at all. Reno itself just feels cheap, and dirty. Most of all, there is nobody there. Old locals n shiit and that is about it from my experience. Closer to a Riverboat Casino than to Vegas. I personally vowed to never go back...but damnit I have too. Like I said, at least there's Tahoe. Just trust me, and don't go. Vegas 100 times better.

I haven't been there in a long time, but I remember single-deck BJ was the norm, if that appeals. I don't know what current conditions are.

There is lots of 6-5 blackjacks for the single decks now. They never were that good anyways, the Reno rules of doubling on 10 and 11 only covered most of those single decks.

6/5 BJ absolutely sucks. Better off staying at home and playing online.

Thanks for the tips Bill. You paint a pretty bleak picture.
