IF YOU WERE A BOOKMAKER, WOULD YOU MOVE "ON AIR?"

Seriously guys, if you ran a sports book, would you change your line before taking a bet because DINO and VINO next door "moved" a full point?

I raise this question because barring an injury or pertinent new information, SOME bookies will adjust their lines BEFORE actually taking a bet because they see EVERYONE ELSE moving their lines!!!

On the other hand, I know some offshore establishments that won't adjust their lines UNTIL AFTER a bet is placed into them...

So the question I am asking all of you to answer is simple...

What would YOU do if you OWNED an OFFSHORE SPORTS BOOK?

Move ON AIR or ON THE BET? :Guitarman :ohno: :messed:

Thanks in advance,

Depends on my client base. If I'm dealing to a majority known chasers then hell yes I would! Why would I consistently deal them a free point?

I would move without a bet. Just not as far as the other places.

So far, the answers that some of you gave are EXACTLY what the most successful gambling syndicates are HOPING that you would do...

For a few shekels, they FAKE you out, then BLAST away with a MAXIMUM bet in your store getting a more favorable number for them to boot...:drink:

On that note Shrink, I have heard that some of the wise guys will put up HUGE $$$$ on a side, watch the line rise a point or whatever, then come back and double their original wager on the other side, which is the side they wanted in the first place. Now, they'd be losing a lot of vig, however, they get their 1-2 point middle and might be worth the vig.

Is this true at all?

If your number is available on the Don Best screen or on G&J you almost have no choice because if you leave a bad number out there too long you will get hammered.

I agree with having to know your clientele enough to know who your sharps are and who your steam chasers are (you don't have to know every single one depending on your size but it shouldn't take you long to figure it out if you are running a book well enough).

I would move on the bet as often as possible. It's all about evening out your action not Dino and Vino's action.

_wheredatreezat,

Absolutely true and makes a lot of cents (pun intended)...

Hitman,

Much of Pinnacle's success cam be attributed to gambling, not bookmaking...:homer:

Shrink, I move about 80% on Action and about 20% on Air and here is the reason for the 20%. If I have Kansas -19 and the DBEST screen lights up to 21, i will go to -20 on Air, I can still get bet -20 by followers, why offer them a free point??? On the other hand if I am Kansas -19 and the Dbest screen goes black to 19.5 and some 20's I certainly will take a bet before I move the Number, I am from the school of book the bet then move the line, but there are certain instances to move on Air!

Ok Shrink how about this. I would follow Pinnacle move for move because they are the sharpest book in the world.

If as a bookmaker I'm going down, Pinnacle is going down too on those same opinonated numbers

Pinnacle does move on air sometimes by the way. Would you agee with that Shrink?

I wouldn't leave the best number hanging there, I'd be in the middle, but I don't book.

You dont have Pinnacles Volume and you dont have thier customers, the line that is good for them is not neccessarily good for you!

Pinny is a volume shop and can handle the swings. If your business model isn't designed in a similar fashion I wouldn't tail Pinny's movement verbatim. There are worse shops to tail out there though.

Sportbet and Chips

If I was a bookmaker, I would have plenty of customers, plenty of bankroll, and limits in tact to where I couldn't go out of business on 3 months of bad beats. I worded that sentence wrong. I meant to say that if Pinnacle starts getting hammered on thier opiniated lines I would get hammered too.

Make sense?

Depends on who Dino and Vino represent. Certain books carry more weight than others. When a sharp book like DelMar goes from 8 to 9.5 it will get my atttention and I will use 8.5 off air and take 1 bet at -9 to get to -9.5. The trick is to have your shop set up so you only take that one bet at -9 and not 4 or 5. On the other hand if a square shop moves a point and a half (say BoDog) I will let my own chart move the number natrually by taking action.
