It dates all the way back to giving a young whipper snapper named Nolan Ryan away for Jim Fregosi, and got worse when the gave up on another Hall of Famer Tom Seaver for these household names Pat Zachry, Doug Flynn, Steve Henderson, and Dan Norman. Seaver who went on to win 311 games and played for many years after that trade ....:nono5:

The traded David Cone away to Toronto for a young Jeff Kent...which would have been a nice deal for both teams as Kent became a great player ...But the Mets traded Kent before he developed into one of the toughest outs in baseball for Carlos Baega and 4 boxes of rawlings Baseballs... Baerga was never the same player once he left Cleveland...

They threw another ton of money at Vince Coleman 4 yrs 19 Million, Coleman had been a threat to steal 100 bases a season in previous years...Coleman never played more than 92 games for them and never stole more than 38 bases before moving on...

They traded for the very versatile Juan Samuel sending a young Lenny Dykstra to Philly...

Samuel played one year in NY batting .228, Dykstra became one of the best leadoff players of his time and one of the Most Valuable Players in baseball before steroids ravaged him...

Traded for Robbie Alomar at age 34...Alomar coming off a great year with Cleveland batted .336 and drove in 100....

In two years with New York Alomar was mediocre at best, batting in the .260s and becoming almost a liabilty in the field...and not even a base threat anymore.

Mo Vaughn :puke1:

At age 32 Big Mo came to NY the same year with Alomar, Vaughn had 300 homers already under his belt, with New York he hit 29 and drove in 87 in TWO years before he was forced to retire :icon_conf

Vaughn is still just 36:nono5:

And last but cetainly not least Bobby Bonilla....

Bonilla came to NY as the richest signing in baseball history 5yrs 29 million...After hitting two homers on opening day Bonilla appeared to be destined for greatness , he did hit 38 homers one year, but never drove in more than 87 in a Mets uniform...

New York media had a field day with him...Bonilla was eventually traded away

What's funny about George Foster's career...He hit the 52 homers in 1977 and followed it with 40 in 1978 but never hit more than 30 in any other year...

Foster was 6-1 and 185, he would be a beanpole by todays standards:icon_conf

How and why did he have those two freak seasons :icon_conf was it cream?

Foster was solid for the Mets actually...

I can still recall how that 52 homer season was the standard for MANY years afterwards...
