Indiana University has received permission from at least two schools to interview candidates for the Hoosiers' football coaching vacancy.

Kansas State defensive coordinator Bob Elliott and Harvard coach Tim Murphy are prospective replacements for Gerry DiNardo, who was fired by IU on Dec. 1 after going 8-27 in three seasons.

Harvard athletic director Bob Scalise said Tuesday he has given IU permission to interview Murphy but would not elaborate beyond confirming the Hoosiers' interest.

In 11 seasons at Harvard, Murphy has compiled a 66-43 record, including 10-0 this year. He was also a head coach at Cincinnati and Maine.

Attempts to reach Murphy on Tuesday were unsuccessful.

Kansas State athletic director Tim Weiser also confirmed Tuesday he has granted the Hoosiers permission to formally speak with Elliott.

"Bob has been a quality person in the years that I've known him and he has done a great job here for us," Weiser said. "I'd hate to see him leave but like a lot of us who have spent time in jobs as an assistant, you want to have a chance to run your own program.

"I think Bob has a sincere interest in the opportunity there."

Elliott, who has met at least once informally with IU athletic director Rick Greenspan, has never been a head coach. Besides Kansas State, he also spent two years as the associate head coach at Iowa State, and 12 seasons at Iowa, his alma mater.

Attempts to reach Elliott on Tuesday were unsuccessful.

Another coach who is interested in the Hoosiers' opening, former Washington head coach Rick Neuheisel, said he has not been contacted by IU.

Neuheisel was fired as Huskies coach in 2003 after it was revealed he was involved in a high-stakes NCAA basketball tournament pool. Neuheisel was cleared in October by the NCAA of any wrongdoing in the case. He had a 66-30 record in eight seasons at Washington and Colorado.

"I hesitate to talk on the record only because I don't want to step on anybody's feet," Neuheisel said Tuesday. "Ultimately these things have to take the right amount of time, and it's important that the university gets to set its own timetable.

"But I'd definitely be interested. I think it's a good job and I think someone could be successful there."
