LOS ANGELES -- Rick Majerus will come out of retirement to coach Southern California's basketball team starting at the end of the season, according to a sports website report on Tuesday night.

The former Utah coach, who retired last January in his 15th season with the Utes because of health reasons, was expected to sign a five-year contract with USC and will resign immediately as a television college basketball analyst, the website reported, citing anonymous sources.

USC was expected to announce Majerus' hiring as early as Wednesday.

Responding to the report, USC sports information director Tim Tessalone said Tuesday, "We haven't done anything and won't do anything tonight."

The school fired Henry Bibby last week four games into his ninth season, and installed assistant Jim Saia as interim coach for the rest of the season. The Trojans are 1-1 since Saia took over. Bibby had a 131-111 record at USC and took the Trojans to three NCAA Tournaments.

The 57-year-old Majerus was in the first year of a five-year television analyst deal and was expected to pay a negotiated buyout to the network, the website said. He worked his last game on Monday night in Philadelphia, where Wake Forest beat Temple.

Majerus coached Utah to the national championship game in 1998, losing to Kentucky, one of the school's 10 NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure. His other coaching stints were at Ball State, Marquette and with the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant.

amazing a school the size of USC, that has such a good football program cant find success in baskets...

Kinda like why Duke cant win in football, or Kansas cant win in football, or why Miami-Fl cant get a basketball team, or why Ohio State baskets is never as good as the football team...

Many schools incorporate both very well...Texas, Florida, Syracuse, Texas Tech, UCLA, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, all these schools can manage to put winning teams out in both sports, u just wonder why some of the other high profile schools in either sport, cant do it in both consistantly....

Even look at IU, have always had good basketball (til last couple years) rarely have good football team.....

It cant be that hard to get good athletes to these schools or they would suck in both sports.....Guess it really does come down to the recruiting, and the coaching, more than we realize...

the money is in football, all resources goto that

That doesnt explain Duke, North Carolina, Indiana, Kansas, Illinois, Arizona, Kentucky, and others...

Why are they so far ahead in baskets, if all resources go to football...?

Majerus isn't broke. All he does is eat food. He has no other vices. He loves to coach inspite of what it will do to his health.

Majerus a gym rat who just missed coaching..Some guys are like that..He feels his health has improved so he is ready to jump back in..

I thought Reggie Theus would get that job..Pitino is preparing him for a job..I felt that Theus had great recruiting abilities in the state of Calif..Thought he would be the choice..

Watch for Theus..
