Could be a good trade, depending on how they would spend the extra money. I.e. Beltran or something.

Yeah it all depends on the $$$. I don't think either of those guys are high-priced players. Wonder how much of Sosa's contract they'd have to eat.

I don't think Hairston or Julio are great add-ons, but if the price is right...

This trade would catapult the Cubs into the playoffs, much like the Nomar trade catapulted Boston to the penant.

The Baltimore Sun states an Oriole source said it would never happen unless the Cubs pick up 80% of Sosa's contract. No way the Cubs would eat that much money. Thank god!

80% of what? The first year or both years. The problem is if Sosa stays a Cub he is guaranteed 18+6m buyout. But if he's traded, Year 2 kicks in and he gets another 12 mil or so, so 36 mil total. If the Cubs took 80% of that they'd be spending more than if they simply ket him. Obviously that makes no sense. If ther O's just pick up 14 of the first 18, then the Cubs save 4+6 buyout. 10 mil over 2 years. That's not that far. I say toss in another 2 mil and we have a deal. Cubs pay 12 MIL of the remainder in Sosa's salary. Would save the Cubs 6 in each of the next two years, and they could use that...possibly on Beltran including the savings from Alou (9m) and Clement (6m). That's 21 mil with Sosa's 6. Or maybe the Cubs can convince Maggs Ordonez to take a Nomar-like 1 year deal.

I think its a good deal for both sides, if the Cubs eat the money. Sosa is a temporary upgrade to the O's right field and fills some seats. Julio is a capable guy for the pen, but nothing that puts the Cubs over the top. The O's have given Ryan the job so Julio will just be disgruntled in Baltimore. Harrison is just a throw-in. Makes the O's a little better team this year I would say, but certainly doesn't do enough in such a loaded division.
