The Yankees have reached agreement on the principal players in a three-team blockbuster trade that would land them coveted lefthander Randy Johnson, Newsday has learned.

A few details have yet to be worked out, but indications are they are not big enough obstacles to kill the deal.

The Yankees would receive the 41-year-old Johnson in the deal while sending pitcher Javier Vazquez and two minor-league prospects, catcher Dioner Navarro and third baseman Eric Duncan, to the Dodgers, according to an Arizona source. The Dodgers would send pitchers Brad Penny and Yhency Brazoban and outfielder/first baseman Shawn Green to Arizona to complete the deal.

Johnson and Green both have no-trade clauses. Johnson has been requesting a trade to the Yankees for quite a while, so he will surely give his OK. Green's former agent is Jeff Moorad, who currently runs the Diamondbacks, so there's a great likelihood he would also approve the deal.

The other issues involve perks in Johnson's contract and how he would be reimbursed for the loss of them with a trade to the Yankees, such as his tickets to Phoenix Suns games, and physicals for the players involved.

The Yankees are expected to give Johnson a contract extension once the deal goes through.

Nice move by the D-Backs, gave up a guy with another year in town at best for two quality guys still in their prime. Dodgers get a solid starter who will deliver for many years. Yanks get to keep dreaming a rotation of creaking old guys will regain their lost glory.

Isn't Johnson in like the last couple years of his career? Good thing the Yanks basically gave up nothing for him they couldn't replace down the line, Vasquez was a major dissapointment.

Now the Yanks have to find a home for Kevin Brown. They could keep him as their #4 behind Mussina, Pavano, and Johnson. Somehow I doubt it though.

I don't know Brown's contract details but he would be a great 4th starter for the Braves, he is from Macon. BTW Tim Hudson is from Columbus, GA. All we have to do now is find a home for that loser Horacio Ramirez...the Mets sound good.

Rob,

Jerry and his son sold the team before the year to Robert Sarver, a guy in his 40s who got rich through real estate. Jerry has been a smart guy and made good organization decisions, but they really needed to accept the calls of the people they hired, but they did not. As a result the Suns went downhill to the point they sold the team and the stadium for about $400 million.

Lots of fans, myself included, were questioning how Sarver came in determined to spend every dime of cap money and then it looked wasted spending all that money on Nash, but I gladly eat my harsh words and praise them for resurrecting the team in such short order.

Pedro will fit in very well with the Mets. Kind of like Roger Clemons did with Houston. Don't think that Randy will do as good. Should be cool to see him in the stripes and I look forward to the +250's

they should only let him go like 4 innings per start through august.
try to keep him as fresh as possible.

on paper they are really good.

1st base still needs to be addressed
