CATCHER TBNL

here are the total numbers of homers last year by the new position players:

drew 31 homers
kent 27 homers
valentin 30 homers

easily surpassing the offensive output of beltre - these team is STILL fundamentally sound in defense. with choi on the bench, and few other roll pieces such as ross and antonio perez still in - this team is looking as good as ever!

now if we could hit up the pitching market and catching market, things would get that much better. go dodgers!

The Los Angeles Dodgers quickly moved on in the hours after they withdrew from the proposed three-team Randy Johnson trade, agreeing in principle with free-agent outfielder J.D. Drew on a five-year, $55 million contract.

The Bergen Record (N.J.), citing an industry source, reported the deal in Wednesday's editions.

Drew must pass a physical before the deal can be consummated. Because of the holiday looming, an announcement might not come for several days.

The Dodgers have been pursuing Drew, who reportedly turned down a three-year, $25 million offer to re-sign with the Atlanta Braves, ever since they lost third baseman Adrian Beltre. Drew hit .305 with 31 homers, 93 RBI and 12 stolen bases last season, the first time he played a full season without going on the disabled list.

Beltre, who hit 48 home runs last season, signed a $64 million, five-year contract with the Seattle Mariners on Friday.

The Dodgers' negotiations with Drew heated up after a proposed 10-player trade, with Randy Johnson as its centerpiece, fell apart Tuesday. The New York Yankees would have received Johnson, and Los Angeles would have obtained right-hander Javier Vazquez from New York along with two top prospects, catcher Dioner Navarro and third baseman Eric Duncan. The Dodgers also would've gotten pitcher Mike Koplove from Arizona.

Late Tuesday, the Yankees criticized Los Angeles for "reneging" on the deal.

"As we sit here right now, the deal is no more," Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta said during a conference call. "I've been saying all along that we weren't going to do the deal unless it made sense for this club in 2005, and that was not the case."

as a dodgers' fan - i HATE this move.

J.D. Drew for $55M - are you kidding me? i wouldn't pay him $5.5M for 5 years - let alone 10 times that

amazing how scott borass f*cks the dodgers over beltre then f*cks them once again with Drew getting what he got.

i will speak for all dodgers' fans in saying

if you wanted to pay someone this much - why not kick in a few extra million a season and KEEP beltre

i'd rather have beltre than drew

the dodgers are getting KILLED here in the local media - and rightfully so!

Coming from a STL. fan, Drew is a injury prone piece of $hit, who can only stay healthy to get a big payday! I am glad he stayed in the NL so that my redbirds can face him often (if he is in the lineup)

we shall see - im optimistic - we would have shelled 20 mill more for beltre, 100+ for beltran, and way too much for half of our crap.

we were able to shed so much payroll this year. finally hundley off our books, just wait, this team will be great.

you can't be talking about the dodgers - can ya? this team is gonna SUCK - big time. the only thing helping them out is the rest of the division is gonna BLOW! the rocks will suck. the padres won't be much better. the d'backs are gonna suck - especially if/when they get rid of Randy for if they think Glaus and Ortiz have anything left in the gas tank they are morons - and the Giants will struggle since Barry will have to play this year w/o steroids!

Braves/Cards fan here.....i was shocked Drew stayed as healthy as he did. Guess we know why now. He'll probably miss half the season next yr, and LA will be stuck with a salary they won't be able to dump. :hump:

you see thats fine, coming from a downright unlucky team for the past 5+ seasons, im use to pessimism. which is perfecly fine with me. last year? no chance in winning, let alone the west. what happened? we won. as unpredictable as we were down the stretch, we won ballgames.

until we fall to the cellar - give us our respect. we made the playoffs - with as crappy a situation as we were dealt. injuries almost had us asking lasorda to play first.

but please, continue to bag on our new bats so long as we are losing. that i can deal with. i dont think there is a team in baseball someone cant rag on. but...if they are world series champs, division winners. pennant clinchers - ill show them the love until they break their fans hearts.

so once again, im optimistic that more pieces of the puzzle will fall in. now whose with me? (haha, nobody)

They overpaid. JD Drew getting a 5 year deal with any terms is a real x-mas present for him.

Odds he stays healthy all 5 years:
yes +1250
no -1700

And as things stand now, the Dodgers will be worse than last year. Won't surprise me if they go sub-.500. Valentin? lmfao. They lost their best hitter in Beltre. What's to be excited about?

i dont think anyone is excited he left. stupid point. glaus was gone by the time beltre left. whose the next best power hitting 3b-man available? corie coskie? no he was already gone. as much as i hate to admit it, they got the only player they could of in terms of trying to make up for some of those homeruns lost.

but ill be laughing all year when beltre can hit a thing. ha! he thinks its a cake walk to step into a new league. we shall see.

Wonder how people who are for the owners in the NHL dispute view this signing? I suppose it is the players fault. :WTF:
