BOSTON -- Catcher Jason Varitek is staying in Boston, the latest prize in a flurry of free-agent deals by the Red Sox since Pedro Martinez left town.

Varitek and the team reached a preliminary agreement on a four-year contract, a lawyer with knowledge of the negotiations said Thursday. The deal probably will be announced Friday, the lawyer said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Another baseball official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said it was worth about $40 million over the four years.

"Jason is clearly a key asset we need retain. He is the rock solid leader of our club," principal owner John Henry said in an e-mail to The Associated Press, without confirming an agreement.

Red Sox president Larry Lucchino referred questions on Varitek to general manager Theo Epstein, who could not be reached for comment.

Since Martinez finalized a $53 million, four-year contract with the New York Mets on Dec. 16, the Red Sox have added shortstop Edgar Renteria and right-handers Matt Clement and Wade Miller and retained Varitek. Agreements were completed with Clement on Wednesday and Miller on Thursday.

Varitek, valued for handling pitchers, will work with a revamped staff after Boston added five pitchers since winning the World Series for the first time in 86 years.

His agreement came a few hours after the Red Sox finalized a $1.5 million, one-year deal with Miller. On Wednesday, they completed a three-year contract with an average annual value of $8.5 million for Clement.

They also signed veteran left-hander David Wells for two years at an average of $4 million. That's an annual average of $14 million, excluding bonuses, for three pitchers. The Red Sox almost paid that much for Martinez, offering him a three-year deal with a $13.5 million average. They also chose not to re-sign Derek Lowe.

Varitek, 32, was Boston's top priority among its four high-profile free agents who included Martinez, Lowe and shortstop Orlando Cabrera, who got a $32 million, four-year contract from Anaheim after Boston signed Renteria to a $40 million, four-year deal.

Varitek hit a career-high .296 last season with 18 homers and 73 RBIs. Since he was obtained from Seattle in 1997, he has a .271 batting average with 97 homers and 418 RBIs in 832 games.

"It's incredibly important" for Varitek to return, pitcher Curt Schilling said in late November.

"It would be devastating to this team if Jason Varitek didn't come back," backup catcher Doug Mirabelli said at the time.

The chance to pitch to Varitek appealed to Clement.

"A huge thing for me was the catching situation. Hopefully that's the same as it's been for a while," he said. "When I watch catchers, I think, 'Man, I'd like to throw to this guy.' I remember saying that a lot of times" about Varitek.

Miller, 28, had spent his entire career in Houston's organization but became a free agent when the Astros didn't offer him a contract Monday. He hopes to be ready for spring training after missing the second half of last season with a frayed rotator cuff.

Schilling, Tim Wakefield and Bronson Arroyo remain from last year's rotation. Add newcomer John Halama, who started at least 10 games each of the past four seasons, and the Red Sox seem well-armed to defend their title.

"Our depth is significantly improved," general manager Theo Epstein said during a conference call. "You can never assume health and readiness to go, so we'll be very fortunate if we're in a situation where we have six guys ready to go at the same time."

Schilling isn't expected to be ready for opening day after ankle surgery. Miller plans to begin throwing the first week of January and to report to spring training in Fort Myers, Fla., a couple of weeks early.

"I plan to start throwing as I normally would any other year," he said.

Miller, 28, was a combined 31-12 in 2001 and 2002 but wasn't surprised when he wasn't offered a contract by the Astros, who hope to re-sign high-priced stars Roger Clemens and Carlos Beltran.

"I guess they felt that they weren't going to take a risk on me," Miller said. "There's no hard feelings."

He was impressed that the Red Sox pursued him aggressively.

"I wanted to go to a good team," Miller said. "I realize good teams have good pitching all the way through the rotation. I think I can be a good part of that."

He passed a physical Wednesday.

"The latest exams show full range of motion, excellent strength throughout the shoulder and rotator cuff," Epstein said. "We're very optimistic that he's going to have success when he starts throwing in a couple of weeks."

Miller was 7-7 with a 3.35 ERA before going on the disabled list last June 29. He was 16-8 with a 3.40 ERA in 2001 and 15-4 with a 3.28 ERA in 2002. In 2003, he pitched through right forearm pain and was 14-13 with a 4.13 ERA.

BOSTON -- As Christmas nears, the Red Sox are looking to give their fans a holiday gift. The club is close to announcing a four-year contract with stalwart catcher Jason Varitek, a move that would take the invaluable switch-hitter off the free agent market.

New York Newsday reported on Thursday afternoon that Varitek and the Red Sox have agreed to terms on a four-year, $40 million contract.

A baseball official confirmed to MLB.com that the deal between the Red Sox and Varitek was all but done, but wouldn't comment on the terms of the contract.

The Red Sox might announce the move as early as Friday, which is Christmas Eve. Ideally, they'd like to have Varitek in town for a press conference. Ever since winning the World Series, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has said that the club placed a high priority on bringing Varitek back.

The Red Sox have had steady negotiations with agent Scott Boras over the last several weeks, and it appears as if all that work has paid off.

Perhaps because it was widely known in the industry how much the catcher wanted to return to Boston, there have hardly been any rumblings about other possible destinations for Varitek.

While Pedro Martinez exercised his free agent rights last week and signed with the Mets, Varitek is the one player virtually every member of the Sox said the team could not afford to lose if they were going to defend their World Series title.

"'Tek' is definitely the backbone of this ballclub," Red Sox right fielder Trot Nixon said a month ago. "We don't have that captain's position, because I think everyone on this team is a captain. But if we had to have one, Jason would definitely be the guy."

"For preservation of this team, yeah, I think we should have Jason Varitek back on this team," agreed reliever Mike Timlin. "What he does on the field, what he does off the field, what he does in the box and on the mound, it's a tremendous help. It would be a big priority to sign him back."

When free agent pitcher Matt Clement signed with the Sox on Wednesday, he mentioned the potential presence of Varitek as a key factor in his decision.

"I heard more rave reviews about [Varitek] from different people then I ever had in the past about anybody," Clement said. "As a pitcher, when I watch games, I watch how the catcher performs and think to myself, 'Man, I'd love to throw to this guy.' I remember saying that many a time, both about Varitek and [Doug] Mirabelli, and that's something I'm very excited about."

The 32-year-old Varitek hit .296 for the Sox in 2004, belting 18 homers and driving in 73 runs.

In 832 career games, Varitek is a .271 hitter with 97 homers and 418 RBIs.

However, it is hard to gauge Varitek by stats, considering his all-around skills and intangibles. Ian Browne is a reporter for MLB.com

He deserves any penny. Maybe the most valuable player to any team in the league.

IF J.D. Drew can get 50 million plus for 5 years why not? Money is a joke in MLB right now. I would rather see this deal than the Mets deal with Pedro as a Red Sox fan. Of all positions catchers are the toughest to fill with a quality player. Posada, Matheny, Gil, Ausmus, Molina, Piazza, santiago, Kendall, and even Rodriguez are all overpaid.

MANY in this thread are very intelligent baseball people................however, as I have been saying for years, many of you over the years have severely UNDERRATED JASON VARITEK and what his presence means to the BOSTON RED SOX(see current dilemma).

One has to understand, this guy does a FANTASTIC job handling the Bosox pitching staff AND brings a ton of intangibles to the ballpark every single day that can never be measured with statistics.

VARITEK in many ways is HIGHLY UNDERrated.

Depends what you mean by underrated...you also claimed Greg Maddux was underrated...I disagree.

Funny you bring this up- I was looking for a thread about Varitek last night as well...losing him is obviously going to really hurt the staff according to many experts Javy Lopez is not near the game caller Varitek is, however Javy was the main catcher on all those great Braves staffs.

10 million dollars a season though for a catcher is still CRAZY IMO! catchers only usually last til just over age 30, then injuries set in (Pudge is the exception)

So who was right, 10 million dollars for a 33 year old catcher...who had 10 homers and was batting around .250?

Was he worth 10 million dollars was the question, and even that can't really be debated because 10 million dollars to the Red Sox is not the same as 10 million dollars to 85% of the teams in MLB.

33-34 year old catchers are usually nearing the end of regular catcher duty...Varitek just blew out a knee so i'm not sure the price was worth it.

Still say he was overpaid and overrated.

However, in fairness to Fish -- I'd take Varitek over a dimensional catcher, like Piazza, in his prime everyday. Numbers don't do catchers justice.

Varitek wears a BIG C on his chest for a reason guys.

Also, having VARITEK not on the field for leadership and the handling of the pitching staff cannot be undermined .........I know some of you dont understand this because you do not follow the Red Sox closely.

This is very true with many good catchers in the game actually and why most good catchers are underrated OVERALL in my opinion(as are good defensive shortstops)........., but VARITEK takes this to the highest of levels as most of those in baseball will tell you(leadership and the handling of the pitchers).

Boston fans are obsessed with the "Captain" title. Bottom line is he's not one of the best in the bigs at handling a staff, and his hitting ability is overrated because the catcher position is so consistently weak.

He's a decent player, but he's nowhere near great. He's a tough guy, no doubt, but combining that with the C on his chest doesn't make him a great player.

Some will argue that he's overrated...some will argue that he's underrated. We'll have to agree to disagree.

I was strictly referring to his 10 million dollar salary , a 4 year deal at age 32 for a catcher is nuts....even if you're Boston and can afford it .
