This post probably would not have been read again, in the old thread :103631605

I disagree, Baseball Guy, the man's soul will rest in peace whether we discuss religion and his life or not. But let this serve as a warning to you or anyone else, not to read this post if you find discussing the truth disrespectful. DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER....

Reggie White was a great football player, a certain hall of famer, but he was a spiritual coward. He was an ordained minister who claimed to want to follow Christ. Christ Himself told us, that if we want to follow Him, we must take up the cross daily and be prepared to be persecuted by the world. When Reggie White spoke before the Wisconsin legislature on 3/25/98, he accused the US of turning away from God, in part by allowing homosexuality to run rampant....

"White said the United States has gotten away from God, in part by allowing homosexuality to "run rampant."
HOMOSEXUALITY IS a sin, and the plight of gays and lesbians should not be compared to that of blacks, White told lawmakers.
"Homosexuality is a decision, it's not a race," White said. "People from all different ethnic backgrounds live in this lifestyle. But people from all different ethnic backgrounds also are liars and cheaters and malicious and back-stabbing."

...Reggie White was absolutely correct in what he said, (in my opinion, he could have gone much further by noting that the US had not only removed prayer and the Ten Commandments from public school, but also restricted any mention of God, and had allowed the murder of 50 million babies by their own mothers by legalizing abortion), and for being correct and following his faith, what did Reggie get? He got crucified (figuratively) by the media, CBS revoked his broadcasting job, and every mention of Reggie White included the words "homophobic bigot". This is what caused Reggie White's faith crisis; he wanted to be loved and respected and admired as a Christian just as he was as a football player. But following Christ does not always bring adulation in this world, in fact, usually just the opposite, so Reggie White dropped out of Christianity. He hadn't been to a Christian church in some 4 years or so (Andrea Kremer reported); he would learn Hebrew so he could translate the scriptures himself; apparently he hadn't gotten far enough along in his studies to give us his interpretation of the Bible. For some 2000 years, Christians have been persecuted for their faith, some even put to death. I can just see Reggie being thrown to the (Detroit?) lions and asking who or what he could bow down to in order to escape his punishment.
So Reggie White was a spiritual coward. That doesn't mean he was an evil person, it just makes him human. All those feats of super-human physical strength that we have either heard about or witnessed on the football field made him seem like he was above us, but he was weak like the rest of us and in need of a Savior just like us. I am both a physical and a spiritual coward and thus I pray daily for the grace and the strength to do God's will. And I pray for the soul of Reggie White also, through the mercy of God, may he rest in peace.
