Do the Colts have an obligation to the league to play to win, with another teams season hanging on this game?

I think not, what do other think?

J-man,

Rule of thumb.... Unless you've locked up absolutely everything you can possibly lock up... You have no obligation to play your starters the entire game.

However, regardless of who plays (starters, reserves, mix of each, etc) you are obligated to go out and win the game.

That's the way the NFL is. That's why you see teams that are 2-13 going at each other like the super bowl is on the line.

WR- Do you expect the Colts starters in til this game is over? I just can't see Manning in this game til the end, if he ended up injured Dungy would be ran out of town...

This is not right.
Tagliabue has to step in for the integrity of the game and make some rule next year for this type of tactic.

And yes I am a Bills Fan and im pissed.

Local talk started last week about the use of Manning in this game. Unlikely he will be on the playing field very much at all. I am guessing the 1st half right now, but would not be surprised if for only a qtr.

Shanahan has played several last regular-season games with subs (including last year against Packers) when there is nothing to gain by winning. The Broncos have been stomped in the playoffs nearly every time that has happened (including last year).

There is no obligation to play your starters if your playoff spot is secured. Dungy's only obligation is to get the Colts into the playoffs with the best possible chance of winning, so he should pull Manning, Harrison, James, etc. as soon as possible.
I would hope Sherman pulls Favre, Green, Walker and several other injured Packers ASAP against the Bears on Sunday to give them basicallya bye week.
Play it like the final preseason game.
If the Bills or some other team suffers, tough. There were 15 games previous to this week to get enough wins for a playoff spot. If in the final week you have to depend on another team to get in, you get what you deserve.

sauder is a great QB! I used him in the video game when manning got hurt, (i played a full season with indy) he will lead the colts to victory! only thing is i doubt he will be calling his own plays. does this mean manning is going to be an offensive cordinator and radio them in?!

Tony Dungy's #1 obligation is to his team

with that in mind - if he plays manning he is a moron! why risk him getting hurt in a 100% meaningless game. i'll go one step further

the game is in denver - and we know what the weather will be like there. if i am the colts - if i don't play manning that means he gets to stand on the sideline for the game - bundled up in a jacket for 3+ hours.

if i am the colts - not only do i NOT play manning - i don't even bring him on the trip. i tell manning to stay home and watch the game on TV. i don't want to risk him getting hurt by standing out in the cold doing nothing.

also - if you are the colts - who would you rather play in the 1st playoff game - the broncos or bills? if i am the colts - i wanna play the broncos - i want NOTHING to do with the bills. i know others might be pissed at me - but all i care about is ME - and i'd rather play the broncos over the bills any day of the week.

this one could get major league ugly - not that the colts care. and as a broncos' fan i am ECSTATIC about all this - which is why i was rooting like hell for the colts to win sunday knowing what it would do to this week's game.

Forget the injury factor. Tony Dungy's motivation is to play Denver in Indy next week. Otherwise the Colts would have to play the Bills.

Winky, if you were The Colts, would you rather play Denver or a Bills Team without, MaGahee, Moulds, Schobel, Milloy, I think you get the point.

While The Colts have the luxury of resting Manning, at other positions, the Teams back-ups maybe just as important, OL, DL, who knows.

if i am the colts - i know i can beat the broncos who (and this kills me to say because i am a diehard broncos' fan) are overrated and terrible on the road and i know what i did to them last year i can do again. right now the bills might be the hottest team in the nfl and all those guys you listed will play in a playoff game.

as for the colts and their backups - all we need to know is manning and the fact he might not play - or much at all. do you want the colts +9 knowing jim sorgi is the qb? if so - good for you - i don't. sorgi will get KILLED out there with what talent he will - and more importantly WIN'T - have out there.

It's a long season, if you have the chance to rest your starters for the playoffs you have to.

Rob Funk,

It's of Winky's opinion that Indianapolis would rather meet Denver in the play-offs and will play accordingly next Week. Being more mature and having played the game at a much higher level than Winky, I believe its the last thing on their minds.
