Why Is McNabb Playing?

With the Philadelphia Eagles already hurting on the defensive line and praying that Terrell Owens will be able to play should they reach the Superbowl, what possible reasoning can Reid have for taking the chance of starting Donovan McNabb? On any given play, his season could end. Coaches never cease to amaze me.

They are very fortunate that he didn't tear up an ankle or twist a knee on the artificial turf. I wouldn't have wanted to be Reid trying to explain how I lost my quarterback two weeks before the playoffs with an answer that I wanted to work out the timing with wide receivers. They practice all week. He's probably done for the night. Wonder what Reid will do next week.

i see it that way also ted, but he already played owens injured and lost him so he might as well get mcnabb out for the rest of the season just for good measure.

reid is a moron.

Subtle, but maybe one of the reasons the Eagles have failed the last 3 years to reach the Superbowl might just include Reid's thought process. Actually, I have always considered him a better then average coach, but decisions like tonight make me wonder.

Ted:

The Eagles are gonna have a bye in two weeks and they want to keep him as sharp as they can with the least amount of risk of him being hurt (ala preseason). If they didn't give him any snaps today or next week, it would have been a 3 week layoff between games until McNabb took a gameday snap. With your logic coaches would never play their starters in a preseaon game.

That's my take

If you don't play for 3 weeks and come out flat in a playoff loss then you look like an idiot for not getting him some work.

Either way you're unfairly judged on the outcome, not the decision.

Its a tough call....I hardly think McNabb playing one series really means much either...He just haded off and threw a screen pass....Its a no win situation...

Fully understand the need to keep players sharp, but don't see the logic in tonight's game. In preseason, the third game, which is two weeks before the regular season is when the coaches have their players put in enough time to be fully tuned. With the bye week, it seems to me that it would make more sense to play McNabb and the starters for a series or two next week, not tonight.

What I don't get is having him "play" and then running the ball almost the whole time. That makes no sense. If you have him out there to get whatever reps he needs, have it be more like a game and not a scrimmage. I think the Birds need to run the real offense to prepare for games without TO and running Levens with a makeshift line accomplishes absolutely nothing. Even if it is Detmer, they should have the ball in the air to get the preparation they really need.

Ted,
There's a little bit of difference between coming out flat in week one and doing so in the playoffs ;)

It's a damned if you do damned if you don't. Not that anyone cares, but I'd have let them get a few series in with a conservative offense just to get a few timing routes in, etc ... and then sat them.

Tend to agree with WildBill here. Saw absolutely no benefit tonight that would carry over 3 weeks from now. Bottom line, in my opinion, is if a team is good enough, they will be sharp and ready come playoff time. Don't know how everyone else feels, but given the loss of Terrell Owens, and the mediocrity of the NFC, wouldn't surprise me in the least if the Eagles didn't reach the Superbowl. With the proper match-ups, they are vulnerable due to their defensive injuries as well as their somewhat limited offense. Just depends which teams advance in the wild card rounds and then the divisional rounds. Of course, my opinion has nothing to do with my preseason future on Carolina.

Preseason future on Carolina.

I bet you would have taken 5 bucks for it after week 8. Now you are holding a nice ticket with a solid team.

I hope Carolina gets there Tedddy

My ticket is once again at Oly at 25-1. But I'm sure after week 8, the odds were off the chart. I never did check back as to how high they may have gotten as I figured the play was a loser. Little did I know. If Carolina gets in, looks likely that the Panthers would play Green Bay in the first round. On the surface, sounds tough, but on any given week in the NFL. Plus, they've been down this road before.

Has any of you considered, that grown men, including McNabb, may have sat around a table and discussed the situation at length. Every year the same stuff comes out, he shouldnt be playing, why did the coach do this, that or the other, the Team would rather play this Team, that Team.

There is a lot more to be sorted out in preparation for a game than any of us know, and you can bet there is a good reason for what coaches do or dont do, we are just not privy to it. As for Reid, he has proved to be one of the top coaches in recent years, they all need a bit luck to go all the way.
