Seattle won its regular-season finale against Atlanta to clinch its first division title since 1999. So all should be right in the Seahawks' world, right?
Wrong.

Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander is frustrated over finishing 1 yard short of Curtis Martin in the race for the NFL rushing title ... and he's blaming the team's coaching staff.

"This is the first time I've ever been back-stabbed in my life," Alexander told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

The source of Alexander's displeasure was the play-calling on what proved to be the Seahawks' final drive of the game. With Seattle facing second-and-goal on the Atlanta 1-yard line and Alexander stuck at 1,696 yards, one behind Martin, Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren called for a quarterback sneak.

Matt Hasselbeck scored on the play and the Falcons ran out the final 4:28 of the game, denying Alexander the opportunity for one more shot at catching Martin.

"Are you kidding me? You know the play," Alexander said. "We all know what it was. Stabbed in the back.

"We were going to win, anyway. We were on the freakin' goal line, and I got stabbed in the back. That's it."

Alexander finished the game with 80 yards on 19 carries. But it was that 20th carry that never came that has him upset — and potentially distracting his team from its upcoming wild-card matchup against St. Louis.

"It was too bad we couldn't get the ball back," Holmgren said. "They ate up the clock on the last drive. Shaun had a chance for the rushing championship, and just missed it.

"That was too bad, and I would have liked to have seen him get that."

I would've taken St. Louis if Alexander had gotten the rushing title. This is just more gravy.

WTF

I never knw Alexander was such a selfish loser. I mean, come on! OK, so you can say aww schucks it'd been nice to get it, blah blah blah but I'm happy to be going to the playoffs.

But to come out publicly and say you were stabbed in the back by your team when your team has aplayoff game 5 days away? That's selfish idiocy. :nono5:

It's selfish to think it....it's idiotic when you blab it to reporters.

He was happy when Atlanta scored at the end, was praying they got the 2 pointer to go to OT.

What a clown.:finger:

Alexander should be pissed at his fuking defense for letting Atlanta go down the field for a TD and barely missing the 2 point conversation. If his defense wouldn't stopped Atlanta I am sure that he would have gotten a few more carries and he would have gotten the title.

He should be happier that they won the NFC West.

I am holding NFC and Superbowl futures on Seattle and I will be hedging out. What a puss he is.

If you had watched the game you would have heard the commentators say to the effect that Alexander was robbed.

I thought the commentators were nuts at the time, I mean this is a team sport. So I suspect Alexander might have been reading his own press.

BTW, does anyone know if and how much he lost in potential bonuses from not being the leading rusher?

Can anybody even fathom Curtis Martin, who won by 1 yard, saying this about his team if the situation was reversed. The difference between the two players is enormous even though they were separated by 1 yard.

Who would you rather have on your team?

I understand Shaun Alexander feeling slighted but if you look back to the Buffalo game where he only put up 39 yards or Tampa Bay when he ran for 45. If he had even an average game in either week The title would be his, and this last game wouldn't have mattered.

the only problem i have is it became public.

the seahawks knew where he stood as far as yards go.

teams help their players get records and titles all the time. case in point was kansas city. gonzalez broke ben coates record with a real effort from the staff to make sure he did.

alexander was just stupid using the language he used and going public.

i'm sure he regrets it .

i wrote in the nfl forum already, shaun has issued a formal apology already for his comments made after sundays game.. we all say things from time to time in haste that we wish we hadnt said...

I can tell you personally that they dont make MEN or football players any finer than shaun alexander.. Ive followed his career since his freshmen season at alabama.. shaun should be thanked for the many things he does for his community.. they do not make them any finer than shaun and if anyone says otherwise, they simply do not know him...
