Seattle won its regular-season finale against Atlanta to clinch its first division title since 1999. So all should be right in the Seahawks' world, right?
Wrong.
Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander is frustrated over finishing 1 yard short of Curtis Martin in the race for the NFL rushing title ... and he's blaming the team's coaching staff.
"This is the first time I've ever been back-stabbed in my life," Alexander told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
The source of Alexander's displeasure was the play-calling on what proved to be the Seahawks' final drive of the game. With Seattle facing second-and-goal on the Atlanta 1-yard line and Alexander stuck at 1,696 yards, one behind Martin, Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren called for a quarterback sneak.
Matt Hasselbeck scored on the play and the Falcons ran out the final 4:28 of the game, denying Alexander the opportunity for one more shot at catching Martin.
"Are you kidding me? You know the play," Alexander said. "We all know what it was. Stabbed in the back.
"We were going to win, anyway. We were on the freakin' goal line, and I got stabbed in the back. That's it."
Alexander finished the game with 80 yards on 19 carries. But it was that 20th carry that never came that has him upset — and potentially distracting his team from its upcoming wild-card matchup against St. Louis.
"It was too bad we couldn't get the ball back," Holmgren said. "They ate up the clock on the last drive. Shaun had a chance for the rushing championship, and just missed it.
"That was too bad, and I would have liked to have seen him get that."
