Laptop seems like way to go, keep your desktop and put in some corner with little table or cart with printer and get router and then use laptop as your primary

if you're looking for more bang for your buck, then a desktop will always be the way to go. There are slimmer cases and styles available to replace the bulky box. big horsepower in a laptop will still run you some cash. if you like to stay online and cruise from room to room or watch tv and have the computer with you, then i suggest getting a laptop with a wireless card and router for the house. It will run you less than a c-note to go wireless and you will be able to put in plays, eat food, watch tv, and surf from anywhere in your pad. dialup sucks bad, go with dsl or cable, really whatever is the best price for the connection speed you want....HF

Get one of each. Use your old monitor, printer, etc. and just get a new box for a desktop. Then thrown in one of these cheap laptops floating around now. Since you are still going to have a good desktop to do most things, you won't need to worry if your laptop isn't top of the line. Just use it for basic stuff like playing music, checking email, and putting in bets/checking scores. With wireless now, you can even move the desktop around occasionally and hook it up to the net by a USB router as well so you are no longer beholden to where the cable or phone line hookups are.

The way I see it, you spend about $800 for a desktop whose capabilities would cost you at least $1500 on a laptop. You can get cheap laptops now for under $700. So you have the best of both worlds really because I find lugging these "desktop replacement" laptops around a hassle at times and you still end up taking up as much space as a desktop wherever you go.

Not to mention laptops are generally less reliable than desktops, with many reports of them going bad within 3 years.

You're wasting time @ Best Buy.

There was a thread about laptops a month ago or so. I posted several links of the BEST places to buy a laptop. Best Buy wouldn't even be in the top 20 IMO. Same with any of the other big box retailers.

What is your price limit? That's all that really matters when looking to buy a PC.

1000, would go up to 1500 if you think it would be worth it.

Do you travel? Do you really think a Laptop is necessary? If not... Don't get one because for the $1000-$1500 price range you don't get much in terms of a laptop. With a Desktop you get a pretty good machine with the ability to upgrade forever as needed. Laptop is a full replacement when it needs to be upgraded.

Desktop you can upgrade each component as you can. Don't get a laptop just because someone on the RX told you to ;)

If your intention is to use the computer at home buy a desktop ,period.
You can upgrade at any time buy better sound, video , memory without having to invest $1000 or more again .

True if you do not travel you cannot beat a desktop and plus most home laptop users are keeping maching in one spot anyway

overrated in costs

Same specs of laptop vs desktop is $350 really not that much

Real light laptops are overpriced and lack top perormance, good only for traveling.

If using on couch and from room to room go with about an 8lb that is powerful like desktop

and yes get cable

I agree with cable but in some areas the providers are really terrible. But the same is said for DSL.

The reason I refuse to use DSL is simply because I refuse to own a home phone. I own one cell phone which I have with me at all times. Home phones are absolutely the biggest waste of money.

I remember ordering a home phone # a long time ago... It went something like this.

Phone Co: There is a deposit of $200 for long distance
Me: I don't want long distance
Phone Co: There is a $5 fee monthly to block long distance
Me: You've got to be kidding me...
Phone Co: Sorry sir... We charge a fee for long distance blocking because it is a service we provide. We suggest you pay the $200 deposit which is refundable after a year. You will save money in the long run that way.

What a bunch of ****. They also make you pay for caller id, call waiting, etc.

With a cell phone and $40-50/month you get free long distance, can call from anywhere, free incoming calls (at least I do) etc etc.

Dealing with phone companies is BS because each of them have what is essentially a monopoly in their respective areas. They're just as bad if not worse than cable companies.

It's too bad there isn't a good satellite internet available. All sattelite internet is garbage until the technology improves. When it does... DirecTV will eat up the market. These cable and phone companies HAVE TO GO! :)
