Speaking about Arizona and race - In October, the Senate unanimously approved a resolution by Sen. John McCain R-Ariz., that the president should give a posthumous pardon to boxer Jack Johnson, the first Black world heavyweight champion. This week, Johnson, who was convicted in 1913 on violations of the Mann Act, a vice law, will be the focus of a documentary by filmmaker Ken Burns premiering Wednesday and Thursday on PBS titled Unforgiveable Blackness. (I plan on watching and will post a notice if anyone is interested.)
McCain, Burns and others last year petitioned the Justice Department seeking Johnson's pardon, arguing that his conviction was racially motivated. No word on that petition. What else is new.
