Iowa finished as a runner-up in its effort to land blue-chip receiver David Nelson. The 6-foot-6, 200-pounder who played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl committed to Florida, selecting the Gators over the Hawkeyes, Notre Dame and Texas.

Holding steady with only a few days of remaining.

Getting him would have solidified a TOP FIVE spot in the rankings........damn.

OHIO STATE, MICHIGAN, and IOWA are going to do the BIG TEN proud in the next 5 years.

All three teams are going to be LOADED in that span.

In fact, all three may be ranked in the TOP TEN in the pre-season polls for next year.

Did pick up another lineman though

The Iowa football team gained one recruit, lost out on another and could be finished adding to its class of 2005, according to ESPN recruiting analyst Tom Lemming.

The Hawkeyes picked up another defensive lineman when they received a commitment from Vernon Jackson, a 6-foot-2, 260-pounder from Evans High School in Orlando, Fla.

“He’s a very good catch,” Lemming said. “He’s a guy who comes off the corner very, very well and does an excellent job of getting rid of blocks and can then really come in after the ball.”

And a safety....

The best recruiting class in Iowa football history became a little better Monday night.

Chris Rowell, a defensive back prospect from Warrensville Heights, Ohio, backed out of his verbal commitment to West Virginia and informed the Hawkeyes of his plans to attend Iowa.

Rowell, considered a three-star prospect and the No. 27 safety in the nation by rivals.com, joins a collection of talent that is ranked among the top five by most recruiting services.

The newest member of the Iowa class is a 6-foot-1, 170-pounder who reportedly also was offered scholarships from Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin, among others.

"He's a free safety who can hit like Bob Sanders and he's a little taller than Sanders at 6-1," ESPN recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. "He shows real good instincts, and the Hawkeyes really like his potential as a DB.

"I think they're excited about getting him, particularly since a couple other teams, Michigan State in particular, came on fairly strong with him at the end."

Any kid that is compared to Bob Sanders is welcome on any team that I like any day of the week. Bob Sanders was best safety in the nation when he was in college. I'm sure he'll do just fine once he plays a full season in the NFL as well. Colts finally threw him in there at the end of the season and he played very well.

And thats why they play the game.

Penn State will also make the Big 10 proud. Where are they at on the recruit list? From what I have heard they are doing very well this of season.

Joe Pa is going out on a winning note this year.

David Nelson seems like a class kid. Urban Meyer is doing an incredible job with so little time on the job. I think UF has a chance to crack the top 10 in recruiting this year. Next year will be lights out. UF got 5 recruits this week that had commited to other schools. If they hold could be another story. Also the Criminoles are about to go down the drain this year. Urban Meyer is the Cats Meow. Your guy, Ferenz is also the Cats Meow! LT

Four-star fullback Kalvin Bailey says he has been taking it easy since committing to the Iowa Hawkeyes on Christmas Day last month. HawkeyeReport.com caught up with the nation's number one ranked fullback for an update with only a little over a week remaining until he makes it official on national signing day.

</TD></TR><TR><TD align=middle>Kalvin Bailey</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- End Image------------------>"It's just been an easy time to sit back and relax," said Bailey. "You don't have to worry about anything."

The 5-foot-11, 245-pound Bailey had visitors out to see him last week, as the Iowa coaching staff made their way down to Seffner, Florida to pay him a visit.

"The coaches from Iowa were here last week," Bailey said. "Coach Parker, Coach Ferentz, and Coach Wilson came and it was a good meeting. We just talked about what I'm going to do when I get up there."

Bailey said the Iowa coaches like his ability to both run and catch the ball and see one particular role that he would fit into nicely in their offense.

"They said they wanted to use me in their single back sets," said Bailey.

Bailey will be the third player from Seffner Armwood on Iowa's roster next year, as he will join current Hawkeyes Antwan Allen and Chris Brevi. According to Bailey, he celebrated his future teammates' last second victory over LSU on New Year's Day like many Hawkeye fans around the country.

"After they won, I was yelling to anybody that would listen 'we won, we won.' It was just so nice to see them come through at the end," Bailey said.

As for signing day next Wednesday, Bailey will put his name on the dotted line in a ceremony at Armwood High School.

"I'm just going to sign at our school," said Bailey. "They have it set up for us and we just have to go and sign."

Finally, Bailey, who plans to major in psychology at Iowa, told us what he looks forward to in starting college at Iowa later this year.

"I just look forward to having a great college career and getting an education," Bailey said.
