I would be greatful if person knowegeable with computers could answer a few questions regarding adding memory to a computer.

1) I have two DIMM slots. Do both memory chips need to have the same amount of memory?

2) Is there such a think as external memory where I can plug into my USB ports?

Thanks ahead of time.

1) depends on what kind of ram you are using. I think RD ram has to run in pairs. RD ram is expensive. See what kind of ram your computer uses. www.crucial.com

2) I know of no ram that runs from a USB port. Usually you can add a external drive that way like an additonal hard drive.

1) A quick way to find out is to remove one of the existing Dimms & see if your machine will boot (Odds are that it will). Regardless, if you do happen to need pairs, they will be sold that way (usually called "kits").

2) Nope.....good idea though

JJ, if RAM is all that's needed, it's very cheap, 30-40$

Yeah, it's crashing and slow. I have scanned my hard drive for spyware and viruses and nothing shows up. I have Windows XP and sometimes have up to 20 browsers +4 other windows open. I have 256K memory. It takes up to 30 seconds to open up Word sometimes.

Not sure what else it could be.

No wonder you have problems.

But seriously the 256 Meg of memory you have is too limited for your usage. I was told XP really needs a minimum of 512 Meg. Just put at least another 512 Meg in your DIMM slots and it should go great, if you have a reasonable processor speed.

I agree with the earlier post. Crucial.com is the only place I have bought RAM since mid 90's. I have never had one stick go bad. I have built around 100 machines, crucial is the best imo.
