Division III Grinnell College vs Beloit College on ESPN2. Grinnell (in Iowa) has lead all divisions of the NCAA in scoring for 11 straight seasons. Last year they averaged an NCAA record 126.2 points per game. This year they are only averaging 110 points per game, while giving up 118 per. Their last two meetings with Beloit has had final scores of 155-138 and 118-116. Grinell has a run and gun style offense. They are averaging over 60 3-point attempts per game so far this year. Of the 1620 shots they have attempted this year, 1020 (63%) have been from behind the arc. This should be one of the most exciting and interesting games of the year. Wonder if any books will have a line up for this game. I'd be real interested in what the O/U would be.

I am going to watch. I remember writing that story about them after reading the NY Times feature. Amazing a coach would say just shoot a 3 because you waste too much time trying to get a good 2 point shot.

Grinnell makes a complete mockery of the game of basketball. Try and watch, and you'll turn it off very quickly.

Will try and get a dose of this. I would like to watch Phoenix (NBA) more also. I like the run n' gun when the teams can score.

General, you will be disappointed. They don't even try to play defense. Not at all. They would rather let you score a layup so they can take the ball out and get off another 3 pointer. You will be appalled. It isn't run and gun. It's concede the 2 and shoot the 3.

I have never seen em play. Just read about it a couple times, noticed they were getting a Natl TV spot. Still something I would like to witness with my own eyes. But that sounds about right...from the stats I have looked at, Grinell has shot 1020 3-pointers this year to their opponents 84 attempts. Do they full-court press?

Just saw Grinnell and Beloit play a couple of weeks ago in Beloit. Beloit won 118-116. I've seen Grinnell three times now and they've lost twice.

Secret is to shoot nothing but layups. Teams can shoot 70 percent against them. Grinnell doesn't have the guards this year to distribute the ball, thus they are in last place.

They substitute at almost every dead ball. Pressure defense full-court. They do play defense, but force opponents to run with them.
Teams with good guards beat them.

Will be interesting. O/U definitely over 200, unless they get stage fright knowing the nation is watching. Look for Beloit's Josh Hinz to score more than 50.

ESPN should get Grinnell-Redlands for next year and put it right before the tournament. Redlands scored like 173 in a game this year. Grinnell's squad is young and inexperienced this year and is a shadow of team's past.

reminds me of the old Loyola-marymount games.....they would let you shoot just to get the ball back, and off they would go....

They only made the tourney once though, so it wasnt a real success

I played in the same conference as Grinnell my first two years of college. They always have one guy that averages about 40 points a game, and they just launch like you've never seen before. They press, but once you beat them, they'd rather let you have a layup, because they think that they have enough wide-open looks from 3 by good shooters, that 2 points a possession will not be enough to beat them. It's crazy, but I wouldn't call it basketball.

bucsfan as a proud LMU alum, I can tell you they made the tourney 3 years in a row and made the final 8, destroying defending champ Michigan and setting tournament records, and falling to perhaps the best college team of the last 20 years in UNLV. All without their best player. So to say it wasnt a real success is a bit of a misnomer.

GreenDoberman is correct. I am an LMU alumni also ('91)

1987-1988 LMU beat Wyomonig's Fennis Denbo then lost badly to UNC's JR Reid team.
1988-89 lost in the first round to Arkansas with Todd Day and Lee Mayberrry

then in 1989-1990 after the death of Hank Gathers the team beat New Mexico State, defending champs Michigan, Alabama (with Lattrell, David Benoit and Robert Horry) before losing to UNLV in the Elite 8. Quite a run for a small school.

Went back this past weekend as they celebrated the 1989-90 team at halftime.

If Steve Alford took on this same philosphey with the current Hawkeye bunch, they would have a better recored then they do currently.

Sad, but true.
