Smith, who played for the Arizona Cardinals the last two seasons, plans to go out, however, as part of the franchise that made him a superstar and a Super Bowl champion. The Dallas Morning News reported that Smith would like to officially retire as a member of the Dallas Cowboys.
"I will, in some way, shape or form (retire as a Cowboy)," Smith told the paper.
Smith played his first 13 seasons with the Cowboys, helping them to win three Super Bowls. In 2002, his last season in Dallas, Smith became the most prolific runner in NFL history, breaking the record formerly held by Bears legend Walter Payton.
Smith rushed for 937 yards for the Cardinals in 2004, giving him 18,355 for his career, more than 1,600 more than Payton.
According to a report in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Smith may not stay away from the NFL for long. After his retirement becomes official, Smith is expected to join an investment group interested in purchasing the Minnesota Vikings.
