The Superbowl - It's Just One Game - Why The Need For Action?

As the Superbowl approaches, I am always amazed at the increase in betting activity for this one game. I can understand the enthusiasm regarding determining who will be the champion and particularly for those that are fans of the respective teams. But, what I can't understand is why bettors treat this game any different then any other potential wagering endeavor. If there is value then make a play. If not, then pass. Interestingly after the game is over, bettors will go back to their normal routine and look for the next play to make. So why the need for action on this particular game?

i think someone here said the other day it's the New Years of betting......well said.

you also say something VERY important "If there is value then make a play. If not, then pass"

Ted it's Americana like the Kentucky Derby it's just one race why all the action. Personally I have never bet much on the Super Bowl, I have however booked plenty of SB games out of my own pocket, taking on all comers over the years. Unfortunately those days are over.

Because many of us are SICK individuals who forget that the SUPER BOWL is usually the worst time to be betting on a sporting event, period...

We do it for the possible rush of being on the RIGHT side of the most heavily watched and publicized game in the world...:drink:

but please people keep in mind there are sometimes GREAT plays in the SB.....you need to treat it like ANY other game. Don't wager it just because it is the SB but also don't dismiss it just because it is the SB and it makes you feel like a pro to skip it.

i.e........cashed in nice on the Ravens beating the Giants

There is usually some decent value to be found in the props, but those are disappearing as more money gets dumped into them. There is some value though usually betting against the public, but of course value on a once a year event could take decades to actually lead to a return.

I agree OMT, I believe I was the one who made the point about people betting every game when the bowls were on. Playoffs in all sports draw hordes of money and offer some decent value, but I believe most just are looking for action and that can lead to trouble.

Well I have 5 Dimes ( 50 Cents) on a prop that JJGold streaks at the SuperBowl with the Golden Palace logo across his belly. Is this a good bet?

Already people calling to ask if I will put in wagers for them. People that rarely ever wager. The SB brings bettors out of the dust. I like Wils comparison to the Derby. One race, one game of a year and 2 of the bigger wagered events.

Interesting concept.

It should be just one game for most people...and it has been just one game for me every year except 1981 and this year. I have enough riding on this game without any money on it. This team is part of our reason for being in this city!

I'll officially go on record, now that I just looked into this game and I think the Eagles +7.5 is a pretty damn good play.

This should be a close game.

I think the Super Bowl is a game that people who normally dont wager ANYTHING on want to wager on. These non bettors feel that since there is so much coverage on the game, they know everything there is to know and they feel strong about the game. So they want to bet on it.

OMT-asks "Why the need for action?" My question to you is, WHY NOT?If your going to spend 4 hours watching a football game you have to have a couple dollars on it!

I am not sugesting to bet over your head on this particular game. But a couple bucks, sure will make it more exciting than not betting at all.If we are stictly talking about "value," that would eliminate 99% of all gambling. No more blackjack, roulette, craps, slots.Theres no true value on any of those games. Why go to Vegas? Theres no value in Vegas. But we go because its fun,the rush, the excitement.(the girls in Vegas, helps alittle to)
Not bet the Super Bowl? Are you crazy? I have to put my token bet on someone. I couldnt watch the game,if I didnt have a couple bucks on it.
Again theres no value on this game-so bet conservativly, and enjoy the game.

Basically it is the one spot where the books can up their hold somewhat and people either won't notice, or won't care.

Like laying -110 bth ways on heads or tails. I know that has been adjusted insome places, I guess accordingto what Fish has said. But they are charging the full 4.54 hold on something that is trult a 50/50 proposition.

Some of the other opnes they might charge 15 cents both ways, and if they have action they might adjust it even more if one side gets a lot of play.

So it is the books way to get all the saps that never make a bet to pay outrageous vigs and holds just to say they bet some plays in the superbowl.

There are typically some scalps and middles between places. But because the holds are so great, and the limits generally smaller it is hard to even take advantage when you see them.
