Is it safe?? Some guys do it and I myself think it is risky. The only way it is safe (at home) is to use nextel direct connect as the signal is encrypted. The smart guys write it in NY or Phila but then we have guys taken chances in Union City, Jersey City, Newark and Camden.

No bookie arrests here for years and it is a criminal offense. It may change tomorrow, but the judges, lawyers, and police gamble too localy.

It all depends on how big they are. if they are big they lucky to make it through a football season. if they are small you can get away with it. I know a bookie thats been booking for atleast 30yrs, never been popped, but he"s real small.

In reality I think the only way a book ever gets caught is 3 ways:

1: stupid with his money and runs his mouth too much.
2: Gets divorced and the wife is a (unt and gets pissed because she thinks he has a lot of cash he is hiding
3: Turns the heat up on someone who owes him.

A person that books out of his home dont have to run his mouth or put heat on anybody, sometimes when you get so big everybody and their brother knows his business. its all boils down to how big are you. people will talk expecially when you are big.

Small to medium sized in most any local..BM from home..whether popped before or have anonimity..yet often do square-ups in the streets to keep the neighbors from getting too suspicious.

Medium to Large to Nationwide Large..BM from offices(rarely in homes)..as they have wives that don't want it there..don't like to **** where they sleep..plus often have trusted clerks or managers that often run things on auto-pilot from afar for them when old & fat w/cash, or tired of working it all the time, thus don't want commotion/strangers in the middle of their lives..Monster nationwide outs use a mix from apartments, condos, homes, to offices and even industrial park/warehouses often on the move and changing phone numbers and/or using merlins/etc..

Most locals are aware of who's whom, yet don't care and often even play into those same outs..the Feds are the ones that every half-decade come calling with wiretaps and RICO Act trumped up interstate charges for medium to larges..usually most things don't stick..but getting six-figured cash back is often tough to do even when cases are dropped.

JJ, is Philly the little slap on the wrist that NYC is?

I've never put-pen-to-pad, but it looks like a nice trade-off, as most I've known either never did time when slapped on wrist, and even the whales that have done 18 month country club stays to real four year fed-pen stretches can easily justify the time in terms of amounts earned as salary for having been so hard targeted.

Just go offshore, I mean didn't Jay "Jesus" Cohen take the fall, so as that all men could have everlasting island BM life, and Ron "John The Baptist" Sacco get jailed for a longtime..yet Dennis "OJ Simpson" Atiyeh walks..there just is no true justice!

I couldn't do it. I don't care about nosy neighbors ! Collecting debts would be my downfall. I had a hard time getting paid as a paperboy when I was a kid ! I'd never book ! I'll book off work ( call in sick) in a heartbeat, but I don't have a job ! Don't want one ! No locals for me, either side.

"slap on the wrist"..................depends......

what most local bookmakers have on thier side as far as the law is concerned is... the simple fact the law is going after other offenses......ie drugs, violent crimes ect. and usually dont have time for them.

if and when the door gets kicked in........the penalty for bookmaking itself is minor........the problem is that everbody wants a piece now......IRS, FEDS

seizures, scrutinization of ALL assets, allways follows.......

having a federal gambling stamp will not prevent them from keeping your money.......

True, the worst thing of all is that they do not wait to seize anything, by the time you get out of jail that sme day, you bank accts will have a 0 balance.

So true DPO, a federal stamp for the most part is but a one-way street, and has never stopped RICO Act/interstate charges nor asset scrutinization.

As most I've known to have had their doors knocked in, were clipped entirely, or only partially if lucky.

And I also have thought as you do, in that BMs have been "slightly off radar" since drugs escalated in the mid-eighties, then terrorism and white-colar/corporate crime joined center stage in the nineties to present, leaving the honest tax-paying/service-providing BM citizen to live slightly in peace.
