I think the teams to watch are ones with two solid goalies. I think it will be such a compacted season that teams won't get it done with one man in the nets. Also think it could hurt older teams with vets having to get into game shape in such short order. A strange team can make a big run, as always seems to happen but a favored team usually still gets the Cup.
I have gained a little confidence in it. If there was no chance of a deal they would have cancelled the season already. Nothing that wrong with starting the season now, until NFL ends its a tough draw anyways. Look at every team that doesn't sell out each game. The attendance sucks in Oct until Jan, but then they can get big crowds after that. Someday the NHL will wake up too this...

I hope for Roenick's sake they settle and start playing. It can be a long time between the super bowl and march madness.

Talks between the NHL and the players' association broke off after four hours Thursday, and there were no signs the sides would meet again in time to save the season before this weekend's deadline.

During the meeting at the league's office in Toronto, the sides spent 2½ hours huddling separately from each other. NHL chief legal officer Bill Daly said no new meetings were scheduled.

If that remained the case, he said commissioner Gary Bettman would announce very soon that the entire season has been called off.

''An announcement will be made at an appropriate time,'' he said.

Bettman told the players' association on Wednesday that a deal would have to be ready to be written by the weekend in order for a season to be played. Daly said Thursday's meeting gave no indication that a deal could come in time.

''I don't know if I'd say I'm surprised, I'll go back to say that I'm disappointed,'' he said. ''At the end of the day, I know we did everything we could do to forge an agreement.

''It was a pointless meeting today.''

The lockout has wiped out 824 of the 1,230 regular-season games through Thursday, as well as this weekend's scheduled All-Star game. If the season is canceled, there is no telling when there will be NHL hockey again.

Amazing, if this was Baseball, or basketball or football,it would be talked about every day, and the lead on espn...

Since its hockey, its not even mentioned that often...

I know there are some die hard hockey fans, but of all sports, i would think hockey might be the one, that CANT survive a strike season like this...

It almost killed baseball a few years ago, took many years to rebound, will hockey ever be able to rebound?

That may be the case in most US cities but in Canada where most live and die for hockey its the first news item on every sportscast day in and day out.

They should just cancel the season, why ruin the honor of winning a cup with a crappy short season or tourney format. It would basically be a crapshoot.

And so it goes......

I think it the season should just be cancelled. It's too far gone now to make amends. There is no way you can crown a "true" Stanley Cup champion from an abbrieveated season.
