What goes into a the linesmen setting the second half number? Do they have set numbers that they put out based on the HT score and the original line? I mean on a Saturday it would be impossible for them to watch/listen to all the games. If a star player had 4 fouls at half, do they know about it? I cant see how they could.

I think it is mostly based on formula from pregame line to halftime score. And then they move it action. For the most part. They may monitor bigger games a little more, but they definitely have preset numbers ready. Creates nice opportunities.

You have to watch out for dead numbers at the half. Example if a team is up 5 - the number 5 is dead because if the half ends on 5 you have a tie game and overtime.

D2 has a nice explanation, and Wil is correct, and say for example isolated NFL games(especailly affairs like MNF), the leader of the pack sportsbooks have their number polished by the leaders of the pack bettors, before the world gets the adjusted number released..at least that is how it once was.

Billy Baxter may be the best halftime bettor ever..then again he may just be the best sportsbettor ever..and definitely may be the very best combination of card & sport bettor ever..the man has no weaknesses as a gambler?

Who set's the line? Cris?

I would also wonder if setting the 2h line has anything to do with where the action is. If the books are "winning" a particular bet, I wonder if they would take into consideration that they would not want to let people have the option of getting out of their original bet, without the possiblility of being middled by the book.

korn, I believe you answered your own question, as yes there are definitely games where players are allowed to "get off" should they choose to, and others where they must open/expose themselves up if wanting to do so, yet also games where the books are willing to take plenty more..usually if the game sits just right and/or they want the action?

There appear to be many variables involved, ranging from original line, current score, betting handle(smarts, public, volume), anticipated 2nd halve betting(sharp, public, volume), indicators/telltales of current gameflow, not exposing selves to Polish-middle, being sided,etc..

If I'm not mistaken, Richard Klamian used to help set some halftime numbers?

Yet, it could be argued that BB sets the NFL halftime numbers quite often!
