I was having a discussion with a buddy of mine about steroids and we starting talking about how so many players step up their game in a contract year. Now I know you can say well they focus more and play harder, but given todays money doesnt it make sense that they would do a couple of cycles of roids to help put up the stats so that they break the bank the following year? Just a thought, but I can see many players taking that approach.

As far as MLB really cracking down on Roids, I think it will be interesting in the approach that they take. After abviously looking the other way for so many years, how are they "crack down" now? I think that they (MLB) is in a very tenious position. If they would come out and say well 50 players tested positive, could you imagine the fall out that they would incur? I feel like the only way for them to properly handle it is to say tht they are testing the players, but still not report the findings.

And so it goes......

Bud Selig and the powers to be at MLB, curse the BALCO inditement and Canseco speaking out. Secretly, they applaud Bonds, Mcgwire and Sosa for using the stuff b/c "roids" saved a flegeling sport. It brought the "American Pastime" back. They knew what was going on. Publicly, they give the "corporate line" and say how they condem the stuff. This sport was on life support prior to the 98 season, and Steroids revitalized it.

Nomar? Nomar!!!???

Doesn't look like a steroids poster boy to me. Nomar didn't attain his success by hitting 420 foot homers. He didn't by making lots of good contact. Is steroids somehow supposed to help your batting eye?

And if Nomar really thought he was going to go downhill for lack of steroids he would have accepted a lucrative long-term deal before last year, and again probably could have had some long-term deal this year. Instead, he's one of the few guys who took just a 1-year deal with the confidence that he can prove his worth on the field. If he really did attain his success because of steroids then he must be a real idiot for taking just a 1-year deal this year instead of seeking a long-term deal.

Come on Sherm, you just don't like Nomar because he rejected Boston.

i have been telling people nomar is a roids user for a long time now.....it has NOTHING to do with him no longer being a Red Sox....

Like Jose says, the truth shall come out....

I need to do some roids. I don't put on muscle very easily. I mean Canseco endorses them if supervised. No drawbacks?

If Nomar was on Roids then he should sue his dealer. From '98 to '00 he went from 35 to 27 to 21 HR's while his average from .323 to .357 to .372. Seems to me not really the classic indicator of a steroids user.

true but, he had less yeast infections and his periods lasted a day less than when he was a teenager.

Everyone talks about baseball & steroids. I remind everyone steroids are illegal. If these guys admit using them (never mind baseball) what about the law? Is baseball above the law?

not as bad as steroids but...everyone including the commissioner and owners know that 60% of the nba players smoke dope on a daily basis. kinda the same thing. not as bad as steroids since it doesn't enhance performance but...in the same ballpark.

You will not get in trouble at all, unless you have possesion of them and they catch you with it. Just for testing positive, you face no criminal charges. Like when you are arrested and you take a drug test, if you fail, you are not charged.

Sherman,

Let me preface this by saying that even when he was with the Red Sox, I never liked Nomar. I always thought he was a phony (like Prick Pitino, who wrecked the Celtics), and always thought he was on steroids. The only problem was that my friends who are also Sox fans used to think that I was accusing him of being juiced simply because I didn't like him - and I had come to a point where I started to believe that myself.

THEN ... last year when the Sox traded Nomar, I came to believe that there was more to the trade than what met the eye. I had this suspicion that they found out about Nomar's "diet". Then this year, the doctor who stitched up Schilling's ankle gets whacked - go figure. Why would they let go of Dr. Morgan? Then they don't resigned Gabe Kapler when could have gotten him dirt cheap. Think about it. Conspiracy, I know - but I really think somethng happened with the Sox last year as far as steroids is concerned and the Sox wanted to clean house.
