Some posters have extensive personal databases, for example picasso with his base in NBA. A poster at other sites, named Dreamer has awesome numbers.

These guys can answer questions like how many NFL games lined at 7, with the home team favored landed on the 7 in the NFC over the last 10 years ?

or

What's the Anahiem Ducks average of goals scored in third period in road games over last 4 years ?

Is there any way such a searchable database could be established here for all RX members to access ?

It's way over my abilities to do this stuff ! I'm jealous of those that can do it !

It would be a landmark achievement if Rx could do this ! A ton of work, for sure. Anybody here up to it ?

Personally while I have nothing against personal data bases and wish anyone the best of luck that uses them. I find almost any information I need to handicap a game is already on the internet. Take any board game matchup and you will find it amazing how much data is available using a litttle research. A lot depends on what a particular handicapper considers pertinent information. I mean does the Lakers covering 9 straight against the Heat before the Shaq deal really mean anything today? Teams change very drastically from year to year which imo diminishes the value of old trends or stats such as the Ducks 3rd period stat you mentioned.

Again if data bases work for you then by all means stick with them. I am not demeaning there use, just pointing out you can cap day by day using the internet and pretty much find all the information you need. The trick is separating the wheat from the chaff so to speak. I like baseball for stats more than any other sport. I look for lefty - righty match-ups along with home - away stats to begin to form an opinion on a game or pitcher. Others factors natrually come into play such as injuries, umpires, curent team form etc.

Best of luck, wil.

All of this information is already available on the internet. Though it would be nice to have it all in one place with an intuitive search system, it would be a monumental task.

IMO DBs are MOST powerful for middlers and for those deciding whether buying points is advantageous.

If you have Spurs -6.5 -115 vs -7 -107 it's a tough call (at least for me), but a DB would certainly be great (assuming a strong sample size).

I'd lay the -115 of the supposed key 7, but very tight call, very tight indeed.

Doug to answer your questions about DBs in the context described.

1. Modeling would be relatively simple (do a search on 3NF data modeling)
2. Front end query control can be tricky to make completely generic, but it is rather simple to allow for some common queries such as = "get the number of wins/losses by a home team X favored by Y between dates A B" (with the variables, obviously, being user-defined)
3. Getting all the data needed to make the sample size useful would be tough. You'd need to convince somebody to share their db (which would be a poor choice on their part -- why volunteer to give away an edge unless your name is Fish ;))

Yes, very good point. One of the best uses I get out of my data is the value of points. I'm amazed at how few people -- especially so-called professionals -- know the value of points. So much money gets wasted paying too much for extra half points.

As for Wil's comments, I mostly agree. In fact, if someone was to ask me what I consider the most important part of the handicapping process (or at least way up there), I'd say local newspapers/reports. Nothing beats daily coverage. While most information is indeed available on the Internet, one type of data that is near-impossible to find archived is 1st half and 2nd half lines. That's why I started accumulating that data myself. Game data is just an extension of this as it's easy to automate. And while I periodically post individual teams' ATS records for halves and quarters, I can't say I use it much. I post it in response to those who do find it useful. I'm more interested in historical situational data for 2nd half betting purposes.

There are lot of matchup sites on the net. I like Johnny Detroit's Let it ride sports site. You can google keywords Johnny Detroit and find it easy. Statfox and Covers also offer excellent data including write-ups..

I think most of the DBFs on the web are not accurate and I havent seen any of them having the opening lines only closing lines. I havent seen any site posting line history for second half lines. It takes time to build your own but if you do it yourself it would be more accurate but you have to know software like excel, access,...or writing programs to collect the data from top sportbooks

I would only trust my own work in this area. I would do my own tracking.

Yeah, the groups you move for don't use databases, sure. :icon_conf WTF

Just because one doesn't have a database or know how to use them effectively, doesn't seem right to make fun of those who do.
