Well, the much anticipated Barry Bonds spring training press confrence took place yesterday and #25 did not dissapoint. Over the last few years we've had a lot of heated debates over Barry here at the RX. like his treatment of the fans and a myriad of many other Bonds related threads such as steriods, wearing "plate armor" and a seemingly disrespectful approach to the game and it's current record holders.
I know I have probably 100 or so of my 7500 posts bad mouthing this guy, but I just wanted to say Barry talked at that press confrence yesterday like you were sitting at a bar and having a beer with him. Gems like "every year Dodger stadium is the greatest show, they say 'Barry Sucks' louder than anyone. You gotta have some serious talent for 53 ,000 people to say 'you suck' that loudly." let the viewer really know more about the real Barry, something that had been missing for years. Comments about Canseco "I'm better than Jose, I've always been better than Jose. If you want to go make money, go ahead. But I don't see any of your records" had me cracking up and nodding in approval.
He also made a lot of what appeared to be honest comments regarding the media ("theyre all liars" he said), Babe Ruth, race and some other things that made me say ok Bonds isnt the nicest guy youll ever meet but at least he let us know who he is and that he really does have at least some care for the fans and just about any other aspect of the game outside of actually being on the diamond.
I can certainly say a lot more for Barry than the now media and fan dog-housed A-Rod who needs to get his nails done and consult a publicist every time he speaks with the media just so he can tell us "I'm the only one who runs stairs, most other people are taking their kids to school". Barry showed a lot of sides of him, that really let you know who he is and what he's about.
Hopefully baseball fans will get to see the press confrence clip on Espn News or Sportscenter at some point, although you can read an article on it (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/8219331/1) it wont give you the same effect.
Lastly, I want to add he looks about 10 pounds lighter, so dont expect 55+ home runs as something automatic this time around, but the -2 runs over Sosa being offered at olympic is like stealing in this bettor's eyes.
Good luck this season Barry.
