Since he was in the Red Sox orginization, Ellis Burks was my favorite player. Even after leaving Boston, Ellis continued to be my favorite player right through last season (again with my beloved Red Sox)

Back in 1988 I was at a sports memorabilia show and approached a table and was inquiring about some Ellis Burks merchandise. An older gentleman & lady (I was 13) took notice of me and questioned why i was asking about the Ellis Burks stuff. I explained he was my favorite baseball player and that i buy and sell sports memorabilia, but that i hold on to all my ellis burks stuff (and nobody else) They seem to be suprised (i don't think ellis burks is a household name) and geniuely happy. They go on to tell me Ellis wife is their daughter. So of course I'm shocked. We get to talkin and the man says he is going to get in touch with me and have me meet Ellis. Man, to alot of people, somebody like Michael Jordan would be the ultimate athlete to meet, for me it was Ellis. I fell in love with the way he plays baseball and enjoyed watching him play....so i was excited. long story short, i gave him info of sports mem store i worked at.....a few weeks later he came by the store and gave me some autographed pictures of Ellis.......he hung out with me and one of the owners of the store, talked some bs and left.........came by the store (he lived about 40 minutes away from the store) another time he came by with his wife (fine as hell) and gave me some more Ellis autographed items including a Bat & Ball......a few weeks after that, it was a Friday night, I was out and when I came home my pops tells me "OT" called. Something about going to Yankee Stadium tomorrow to watch the Sox play the Yankees and go out to eat after the game with Ellis. Well wouldn't you know, that night shortly after coming home, the cops show up at my door and i get arrested (i wont get into that now) so of course the next day the old man is on my ass, i aint going nowhere.....i never was able to call back OT.....when i called back a few days later he seemed kinda upset........never called him again, and he never called me......havent heard a word since......my wife is suspicious, thinks they were up to something.........it felt real to me, but i was 13.......

i still wonder to this day.....

p.s. i told everyone when Ellis signed, the Red Sox WOULD win the WS and I was serious. He didn't play much, but he was there.

Ellis Burks was one of my favorite players also.

However, I have no idea either what Sherman is attempting to say here.

It seems there's a piece missing Sherm, why were you arrested and what did it have to do with the couple?

SHERMAN, tell the WHOLE DAM STORY..YOUZ KILLIN ME!!!

Come on guys...Sherman wasn't that vague. His arrest was a separate incident which I WOULD LIKE TO READ, TOO. AT 13 or so to get arrested....man...what happened? NOW, the part that doesn't make so much sense was what your wife thinks OT and his "wife" were up to...were they going to snatch you? Bilk you? Take photos of you, the 13 year old boy, and then snatch AND bilk you? FINISH the GD'D STORY YOU....you....YOU story withholder, you. And thanks in advance. tulsa

Sherm

I used to be a table dealer, people were all over Burks rookies and for years after too. I just sold them and didn't question it. I got some great stuff still from wheeling and dealin. I went on a big run last summer in bases and bought a ton of bgs 9.5's and 10's of rare rookies. I got two 1 of 1 Kovalchuks and the two best Bonds: 86 fleer update bgs 9.5 with subs 10,9.5,9.5,9.5 and 86 topps tiffany update bgs 9.5 with the same subs! I miss table dealing.

Being a RED SOX fan, I have quite a few JIM RICE stories.

Some other time perhaps, I will relay a few.

Jim Rice still bitter , first he breaks his arm and misses the 1975 WS , the 86 WS debacle, and now being snubbed for HOF (which he deserves IMO)

Has this man ever smiled in his life?

encountered Jim Rice - ONCE! not that bad an experience

the red sox had just got done playing at the los angeles angels of anaheim. rice was a coach with the Bosox. after the game - some friends and i go to the Friday's about a mile or so from the stadium (The Block in Orange for those who know the area - right by the Doubletree). we are at the place talking when we see Rice and some family members at a table in the place. we were NOT following him there (Unlike Griffey, Jr. who used to go there all the time - and it was well known and at least once per Anaheim visit you could get him at Friday's) but happened to be there at the same time. we waited for him to leave and when he did - so did we. we nicely asked him to sign something for us - and he did. he NEVER said a word to us - but he signed - that is all that mattered.

as for Burks - the Tuesday after Labor Day 1991 i am at Fenway watching them play the angels. B9 and angels up 2-0 and the place is pretty empty. i was seated about 7 rows behind home plate but no one is there now so i go to the front row (and NOT the "Bob Uecker" front row) i stick my camera in between the screen wires in hopes of getting a decent pic. i took 10 and only 1 was worth anything. it was of Burks at bat - you can see his face on the scoreboard and it looks like i am about 10 feet behind the ump. i get it blwon up to a 10x12. burks is playing for the rockies and i show him the pic and he goes wild - asking me where i got that pic - for he has never seen it. i told him the reason he has never seen it is because i took it. i ask him if he could sign it - and he did - and did he want a copy of it - and he did - so i sent him one a few weeks later. he was really nice and cool to me

the arrest really had nothing to do with the story other than it prevented me from calling him back and/or going to the game.....anyways, as i have caused much confusion and seeing the story aint all that exciting....ill move on...
