Well, maybe umpteen out of umpteen is a slight exagerration but here we go...
Although this is considered only a semi-final game, many, including myself, believe that this matchup has the TWO BEST TEAMS in the conference facing off..
HOFSTRA has really impressed me. They have won 8 in a row, 10 of 11, and they were the only team to beat ODU in Virginia all year.
ODU has been the CLASS of this league throughout the season, but since they have lost two games in the past two weeks, some are wondering if they are truly worthy of all the press they have gotten...
Although ODU'S ALEX LOUGHTON just received PLAYER OF THE YEAR honors in this league, some believe that the fabulous point guard for Hofstra, LOREN STOKES, who scored a career high 31 points yesterday against Drexel, should have received this award.
In many cases, I would tend to go with the HOT team, but not today...
I have had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with ODU'S COACH, BLAINE TAYLOR who incidentally was named COACH OF THE YEAR, too.
He has told me that he has been preparing his ODU team for THIS TOURNAMENT ALL YEAR LONG by giving up to 11 players significant playing time when possible, thereby making sure his STARTERS receive plenty of rest.
Yesterday, none of ODU'S starters played more than 20 plus minutes. NO ONE...
On the other hand, HOFSTRA'S weakness is its BENCH. They have NONE.
For most of the game yesterday against Drexel, Hofstra was involved in a see saw game (they were down 1 with 11 minutes to go against Drexel).
Asking Hofstra to play back to back games at such an intense level AGAIN against ODU while ODU exerted hardly anything against W & M, is asking too much, especially when they don't have a bench.
In fact, LOREN STOKES had to play 39 minutes...
In Hofstra's WIN over ODU recently, ODU shot a miserable 35% for the game, and only 27% for the first half. I don't expect a repeat performance from this team.
Most importantly, since ODU will be smelling blood, I expect them to insert their WILL upon HOFSTRA DEFENSIVELY, force a lot of turnovers, and beat them up on the boards since ODU is the bigger and more athletic team...
I can go on ad nauseum but I think you guys get the message...
ODU MINUS the points is MY BET today baby!!!
Best of Luck,
THE SHRINK
