Let's say you have a 2 pound package of hamburger meat....what you are making only requires 1 pound to be used. So you seal the 2ns pound and place it in the refrigerator. 2 or 3 days later you go to use that hamburger meat. It is sealed tight but none the less, it is brown rather than the redish color it originally had. Is this OK to eat?

Sherman, that's just oxidation, that beef should be fine after 2-3 days in the fridge sealed up...

The proof is in the smell. If it smells OK you can eat it. And even if it smells a bit funny, you can cut off a thin layer from the surface and the rest should still be OK.

" if youre lucky enough to get your hands on a steak , you should bite the sh-t out of it.."

Not sure about how true this is but here goes. A teacher of mine in high school told us the story of how his 4 year old ate a week old McDonalds hamburger that was sitting in the back of his car. they took him to the emergency room and supposedly it was ok because there really isn't any meat in it or it is so ladenned with preservatives that it can sit out with no refrigeration for a very long time. I dont know weather to beleive it or not. His nickname was "dirt". Because he was smelly.

What about milk? Lets say it says sell by March 23rd... do you guys still drink it on the 24th or is it in the drain by then? I think you can even drink it like 2-3 days later, if its in the fridge all the time its fine untill it smells funny.

Expiration dates are statistic results, people that calculates such things already ASSUME that people will not care about the date and if its just one/two days older than the max date they will eat it

So they adjust accordingly, it also depends a lot on how well was the food prepared before packing and the storage conditions pre/post sale

I typically eat stuff (canned things) even if they are a week/two weeks past expiry dates

Now obviously if its QUITE OLD then just toss it

It's good a week past date.

Boys it's simple. If it smells like what it is...............toss it.

For example, if your shopping for fish and it smells like fish.............toss it.
If it smells like meat................toss it.
If it smells like milk.................toss it.

FYI.......if your down there eating at the "Y" and it smells like tuna..........just add a lil' Hellman's and deal with it.

The change in color is due to oxidation. It should be ok.

In the future, I would put the other half in the freezer for two days. Then take it out of the freezer the morning before eating it.

Good stuff, ironically I was just cleaning out my cupboards last week and found some canned stuff that had expiration date in months of 2001, so they probably were too far past thedates the stats guy igured would be acceptable LMAO.

But it was funny going through all the canned goods my exgirlfriend has stashedin there that I didn't have a clue as to what it was or how old. But whne cans have some rust (in Cal) and are dated as far back as 2001, then a good time to throw them out. I did have some from nov and Dec of 04 and I ate them veggies mostly, and not bad.

But meat is a diferent animal. I would say it is OK thouh in my book. But then again when I was fishing on the boat we would literally be wiping sludge and other residue off bologna and roast beef and making sandwiches with it a lot more than a couple days old too. And that was sitting in the ice in the hold, not even properly refrigerated. And we never got violently ill. Maybe a guy got the sh its or something from it, but that was the worst case.
