Brett Favre is returning to the Green Bay Packers for the 2005 season, The Associated Press has learned. Coach Mike Sherman told The AP on Thursday that he had a two-hour conversation with his quarterback on Wednesday night. Favre informed him his wife is doing well in her cancer treatment, so he's planning to play at least one more season, maybe more if his own health holds up.

"It came down to his wife and she's doing well in her recovery," Sherman said. "She wants him to play. He said he's looking forward to playing -- hopefully without any off-the-field situations and 'enjoying the journey.'"

The three-time MVP said after the Packers' playoff loss to Minnesota in January that he wanted to reflect before committing to playing a 15th NFL season following a year of personal tumult.

His wife, Deanna, was diagnosed with breast cancer in October, a week after the death of her 24-year-old brother in an ATV accident on the quarterback's property in Mississippi.

And Favre was still dealing with the stunning news of Reggie White's death on the day after Christmas, which came about a year after the death of Favre's father, Irv, from a heart attack.

"After the season, he just needed to think about some things," Sherman said. "Any man would have to contemplate his future when his wife is fighting cancer. It's not like he had to work to make money. He didn't want to be a part-time husband and a part-time football player. It came down to his wife. If she's not healthy, it's obviously a different ballgame. But now she's doing good. She wants him to play."

It never was a question of diminished ability because even at 35, Favre is still on top of his game.

He topped 4,000 yards passing last season and recorded his eighth 30-touchdown season, twice as many as any other quarterback in NFL history, and the Packers set franchise records for total offense and net passing yards in 2004.

imo, he's not doing this team a favor by returning. His level of play has greatly declined, defenses do not fear him as they once did, and his decesion making is horrendous at times. I'll always respect him as a player, but Green Bay has to say enough is enough and foreward in a different direction. Get some new blood in there to start learning the system with a look towards the future.

I couldnt agree more.I personally think he makes horrible decisions in crutial times of game.He always wants to be the hero which means trying to force the ball where it cant go. I still think what the Packers have to do to be an elite team is make A-Green the stud and give him the damn ball. I've seen the Packers throw 3 straight times from the 2 yrd line b4 and then kick a fg when they had Green in the backfield:icon_conf

Yup. I made a good chunk of change betting against Gb and owe thanks to Farve for some horrendous decisions he made time and time again on the field.

Who cares, Brett is amazing to watch. No matter if he throws an into or a td. I love te is she way he celebrates every touchdown his throws. He is still very energetic and im a big fan of his and watching him for one more year will be great.

He was funny in "something about Mary"

I liked how ben stiller made fun of his last name.

He seems like a all american guy.

I wish him luck

Please keep in mind young receivers can make any QB look bad, Favre is as good as any QB that's ever played.

Those recievers are going through the hardest school right now. They will only get better as they have this season. The only reason he has thrown a lot of intos is because he dislikes getting hit, so he just forces the ball out and it usually ends up being a horrible throw or worse an into.

Tom Brady is the best quarterback I've ever seen play (all of this on tele as I don't go to NFL games) an entire game. Bret Favre is the best quarterback I've ever seen throw a pass.

Bret Favre is beyond helping his team. I believe he is a nifty fellow and a great man. I like Bret Favre. He makes bad decisions at crucial times and he forces more than he should. I will be wagering against him and GB next year and hopefully the next. tulsa

PS...by the way...there is no better quarterback that GB could get!! IF I were the team, I'd sign him again! However, this, in the end, is bad news for GB.

He's a gamer and has had a very good career but he should have retired three or four years ago. He's had some good games here and there but overall his performance level has clearly slipped. I know it certainly doesn't help that the Packers have one of the worst head coaches in the NFL and a defense that can't stop anyone but Brett Favre has been finished for a few seasons now.

He's always forced a lot of balls and made poor decisions but his guts and talent got him out of a lot of jams and he pulled out a lot of games with a big play at a key moment. He's still got the guts but when he throws the ball, defensive backs are just salivating. He focuses in on one receiver and everyone in the stadium knows who he's going to throw to. His deep balls are hanging up in the air more and he also holds on to the ball too long in the pocket. He's a Hall of Famer but well past his prime and should have already retired.

Well Green Bay still has a good offensive team, they would just need to get solid QB to lead them which wont be an easy task. The defence will need to improve a lot because it has been very week for a while now. We still have one more year to sort things out. Trust me GB wont go into the bottom of the division with Minnesota being Moss less and Detroit not making any big moves. Only the Bears are improving and i think they will have a winning season this year.

Favre is still one of the greatest QB's out there. Like I have said in other threads, his worst enemy is his coach. Sherman puts Favre in bad situations to where he has him throwing the ball when he shouldn't be. Sherman is calling the plays there. Brady would look bad in Green Bays offensive scheme. If Favre was in New Englands system he would be winning all of those championships himself.
