question:

can a collection agency cause damage to your credit records if the debt was initiated outside the US eg. a debt owed to a company outside the states? or is your credit history only liable to debts within the 50 states?

A debt is a debt no matter where the country is. most likely it will be handled here in the states by a collection agency therefore the judgement will stay on your record!

thanks for your thoughts guys..

yes I do intend to pay them off at some point or another but I just wanted to know the urgency of the matter. If they are not capable of damaging my credit records, then I would not be so quick to pay them off since I have alot of other priorities that my money should tend to... like my offshore account! LOL

American credit agencies and Canadian agencies have nothing in common so one would not know about the other if you leave the country on a debt. The collection agency may still track you down wherever you move too but there have no way to report you to a credit agency in another country.

JFS is most likely correct. Just like debts are sold to collection agents at a discount, I'd have to assume the same thing occurs between foreign and domestic collection agencies.

It might take a little while, but when push comes to shove, they'll probably sell your account to someone in the US who can take many more actions against you.

This is a great idea. Since this book, i'm assuming it's an offshore online book, they may be be afraid they will never get it and may be open to a payment plan or something to that effect. I had never even heard of online books giving credit....or at least to anyone who doesnt have tons of $ anyhow, until recently - and I don't understand why any book would take that risk and how do they intend to get the $ owed them if a person doesnt want to pay.

Doubt if this person has credit owed to a book. only other way would to be to post money at a shop that you have played at for a while and send money in and they credit your account right away before the funds are picked up overseas. Then you play and lose, check your funds at western union then cancel the money you sent over before its actually picked up. Some shops credit your account immediately before even picking funds up. No, I've never attempted this but I know a few who did.

JIM is on the money with this one..

I've actually used IGM-Pay which is an electronic checking method to deposit into an acct and what ended up happening was that they funded my acct but did not withdraw the amount until a few days later, which ultimately ended up bouncing. I believe IGM-Pay is affiliated with ezEcash or propay and I think they are instituted in Canada, hence I was asking about credit issues outside of the US.

Since most of you believe that it still can be detrimental to my credit history, I think I will work out a payment plan with them rather than pushing it off til I had enough to pay it off in full.
