Gillen couldn't cut it in the ACC :nono5:

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Pete Gillen stepped down as Virginia's basketball coach Monday, ending a seven-year tenure marked by just one trip to the NCAA tournament.

``The team did not reach the goals we thought were achievable entering the 2004-05 season,'' athletic director Craig Littlepage said during brief remarks to the media at University Hall. ``There is, however, a solid foundation in place provided by Pete and his staff.''

His Va teams always lacked discipline :howdy:

He would have had the court named after him at Xavier, but instead he went to Providence for some moronic reason (that was AFTER Xavier entered the A-10, so it wasn't because of the conference affiliation).

He went from potentially being a legend at Xavier to a loser.

What a shame.

He won at Providence as well...I am at a loss for why his teams at Va never improved within each season...always lacking discipline and for the most part did not play good defense.

As a former Wahoo, I endured four years of Gillen at UVa. The problem with those teams was that they don't show any sense of urgency early in the season and only play with it when its close to selection time. But for some reason we always get up for UNC and Duke at UHall.

I will thank Gillen for JR Reynolds and Sean Singletary, but I'm glad it's Leitao's team now.

talked to a radio guy in charlottesville after the miami game last week, he told me that gillen pretty much let the players run everything.
towards the end he was so desparate to win he pretty much would tolerate anything.

And it was so obvious...I really hated to watch Virginia play and blamed him ...It's good to see the Cavs back playing ball.
