Off Topic:Received some bad news from the doctor today

I was feeling dizzy for the last 3 weeks so I went to the doctor and got a blood test. The results came back today and everything was fine except my cholesterol.

I was shocked when I saw it was 316. Yes, 316. I am not overweight, don't drink or smoke so I am surprised it is that high. However, I do eat my share of junk food. My wife is in a panic.

Anyone with similiar problem and how did you lower it?

Let me get this right, you felt dizzy, you went to the doctor, blood was taken, your cholesterol came back 316.

Now you come in here looking for opinions about your diagnosis............dude you need a road map.

BTW...................did your doctor get his degree from K-Mart or what ?

Do what my wife tells me.

EXERCISE

EAT FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

EAT OATMEAL AND LOTS OF GRAINS

USE FLAX SEED (YUK)

As we get older we start sounding like our parents.
But changing your diet will lower your cholestrol tremendously.

I dont do what I preach so much, but am much more careful and dont snack as much. Try to eat lots of meats and stuff only when I go out.

But it is easy to snack on fruits and vegetables than anything else.

How was your bad cholestrol? That is the true indicator.

Holy freakin sh!t.....316 IS through the roof.

I'd hope he put you on Lipitor or one of the other drugs.

No more junk or fast food & get some serious exercise.

Besides proper diet, you might be a candidate for Lipitor...

GET..........

OATMEAL(5 times weekly)
FRUITS AND VEGGIES( 5 servings a day)
GARLIC(2 cloves)
EXERCISE (minimum 35 min. vigorous walk 6 days a week)

AVOID......

PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED OILS(READ LABELS)
LIMIT CHOLESTEROL TO 330 mg MAX PER DAY(one 12 oz serving of meat,chicken and an ounce of cheese would be limit. Remember shelled fish with much more in it........drink skim milk)

Fish, aren't you supposed to really cut back or eliminate meat intake (ESPECIALLY red meat)?

Thanks for all the advice guys. Gmon, I got the results via fax from the clinic today so I have to go back tomorrow so the doctor can tell me what to do.

Advice from posters here can not hurt as you can see already.

I am amazed at how many individuals do not realize that CHICKEN has a high amount of cholesterol in it............not as much as read meat, but still a considerable sum( about 2/3 ratio of red meat).

Although not as much as red meat, ONE MUST watch their intake. Two chicken breasts alone would be close to your total chos. for the day of 330 mg.

A rule of thumb I use is to eat JUST ONE serving of cholestrol food per day.........no more.

So this may be a serving of meat, chicken, or fish...........or a couple/three slices of cheese pizza say.

This combined with as much as I stated above should lower ones cholesterol considerably.

A MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR component is to avoid ANYTHING with HYDROGENATED OILS........commonly referred to now as TRANS FATS.

Good Luck! With proper diet and excercise I did not need any medication and lowered mine below 200 and my bad cholestrol is now good. :party:

Yes, Salmon is wonderful to have at least once a week! My advice would be to do everything possible to obtain the WILD variety. Two reasons for this are it is higher in Omega-3 AND they do not contain HORMONES injections that have proven to possibly be unhealthy. It is not easy to find WILD salmon, you have to shop for it. One of your grocers will have it.

I would recommend eating a handful of walnuts 5 days a week............but no more as they are loaded with fat. Walnuts are loaded with OMEGA 3'S.

Well crap.....I'm 100% guilty of the chicken misconception. Only 1/3 less than red meat huh--that just sucks.

Then again, I don't think that I could ever sit down & eat 22oz of chicken tits. Just doesn't have the same appeal as a monster steak.

Living out here in tree huggerville, I can attest that the garden burgers are actually pretty damn good. I just have to spice them up a bit more, and don't really notice the difference.

I'm starting to think that this whole veggie thing is probably the way to go if you want a happy ticker.

BTW....If you're a big fish\seafood eater, be careful. I've seen some really bad info on the mercury levels---and that's what they are letting go public.
