I started betting offshore in July of 2001. While I was learning the do's and don'ts of the offshore biz, one of the first things I was told was to stay far away from ESB. On every gambling forum I've ever been on the consensus is the same.....ESB is bad news. Reputation goes a long way no matter what business you are in. So how does a book like ESB (and others) stay afloat?

They simply operate in rogue, unregulated areas where no one cares about the common man.

Lack of knowledge in the people they are targeting.

Online gambling is booming bigger by the day and a new guy coming along surfing the net sees a banner and clicks and has no idea what they are getting into. The site will put a nice write-up on the homepage how they are the best of the best with bonuses, payouts, CS, etc...

The player falls into the trap and only finds sites like TheRx.com when to late.

Thats understandable General. But are the number of new (uninformed) gamblers large enough to keep a shop like this open? If books strive on loyal, repeat customers, looks like that would alone be enough to bring them down.

It's like those telemarketing scams that say "you have won a car!" and then say you have to send money to claim it. These are outright scams, but even though there are plenty of warnings out there, people still make a buck off it. They learn how to target suckers. Sad but true.

Its the same reason scamdicappers that promise 80% winners who are really 30%. They stay around because they will simply call the next person, and scam over and over again. It would be easier for a sportsbook to do this then a scamdicapper. It only takes a few weeks for the client to figure out that a tout is a lier. You can play at a sportsbook for months depositing funds until you finally ask for a payout before you find out youve been had.

One thing I am curious about is how ESB decides to pay. They stiff plenty of players, but every now and then they do pay from what I have read (after a good couple of months it seems). Are there some payouts they acutally process normally I wonder.

I dont think they have payed anyone in years. I was one of thier best customers, they were my first book. I did more depositing than withdrawing, but when they moved to Ireland about 4 March Maddnesses ago they quit paying. They owe me 2400 bucks that I will never see.

My Top 5 books that will always survive.

Delmar
Olympic
Grande
Cris
Pinnacle

In the mornings Grande is one of the last ones to go up, so when they do go up there line is solid as a ROCK. Olympic, as long as Spiro is running the show he will always make money betting and booking. Pinnacle WRITES alot of volume and he will always make money but as far as him betting I will take the greek.
Cris has been around for along time noway they can l can see them folding in the near future. Finally the last one Delmar I cant say enough about this shop, strongest line in the INDUSTRY by far. I cant see none of these 5 books in the near future folding.

One thing to remember about ESB is that they were one of the innovator products. They were my first book in the offshore era. They were sharp enough to advertise blatantly in the states. Their add in the daily racing form is what caught my eye intially. I can remember my first couple months was like a kid in a candy store, so many otions, so little time.

Unfortunatley for me & other's, Dennis, et al, become greedy, and made some horrendous business descions, most notably not jumping in with both hands to handle click & bet wagering while he still had a very generous market share.

The fact that they still can attract new business is truly remarkable.

In this day and age of communication and technology, I find truly remarkable an understatement. We could have ads on CBS/FOX/CNN, etc... warning of if someone really cared.

Yeah, TheRx.com has made some mistakes just like most everyone on earth. Likely will again.

My apologies for the errors so far.

Jim, it's the nature of the beast. There is no regulation and there are no guarantees as you know sir. Until there are legal consequences for the thieves it will happen over and over again. It may be an Rx advertiser or it may not, but either way, players will be hurt.

I think everybody should be thankful that the Prescription does exist, and has saved alot of people MONEY. just think if it never existed everybody would be in the blind. before you would hear this book is short of funds without knowing the FACTS... the Prescription is the best thing that could have ever happened to the INDUSTRY... everytime somebody complains about a book if the Prescription didnt exist they would just tell their close friends about it. its a big DIFFERENCE between complaining to your friends and complaining to the Prescription about your problem, because you will get more than your friends feedback. only my OPINION...

Mr. General,

I understand and at no way am I down playing Mr. Shrink or the Rx. I'm only stating that ANY shop at any time can bail out and screw their customers. Yes more likely than others but NO BOOK is 100% safe IMO. Thats why the new guys have to be very careful, h ell even the oldtimers get scammed, correct?? I'm sure ESB are paying certain customers who lose steadily and win once in a great while. Somebody is being paid.

I didn't take your post as negative Jim. I understood your stance also. Thanks. You hit the nail on the head with ESB.
