Knicks chasing a sorry lot

ATLANTA - So you think the Knicks are a mess, their playoffs hopes all but dashed by late-game meltdowns at home to Seattle and Miami? Consider the state of the teams they're chasing.

Orlando, loser of six straight and tied with Philadelphia for the East's last playoff spot, four games ahead of the Knicks, fired head coach Johnny Davis on Thursday and replaced him with Chris Jent - or as Knicks guard Jamal Crawford said, "Who?"

That's Sparta native Chris Jent, who played three games for the 1996-97 Knicks as a teammate of Herb Williams and, like Williams, is an Ohio State product.

The 76ers, meanwhile, are 5-5 since Chris Webber arrived, and a published report Thursday indicated that some players despise coach Jim O'Brien.

Even Indiana, 5½ games ahead of the Knicks in the East's seventh playoff spot, will almost certainly play the rest of the season without not only Jermaine O'Neal, but also starting point guard Jamal Tinsley. Including the suspended Ron Artest, that's three missing starters.

"It's never a bad thing," Williams said of that turmoil, "especially when you're chasing [those] team."

"I look at it as an opportunity," Stephon Marbury said.

Of course, from the opposite standpoint, you could look at the Knicks' situation this way: After blowing two winnable games at home (but actually picking up a half-game in the playoff race), they now play six of their next eight on the road, where they're 1-13 in 2005 and 7-22 since the start of the season. Plus, their two home games are against division leaders San Antonio and Boston.

"We're at our wits' end," Crawford said.

Actually, let's liken the Knicks to a cat and suggest this is their ninth and final life, their last chance to keep their season afloat.

Splitting the next eight games, beginning with the league-worst 11-53 Hawks tonight, might not seem like much. Yet with road games at sub-.500 Portland and Golden State before the end of the month, plus those two home games, it's doable.

Then, if they're still in the playoff race, their final 12 games include home-and-home sets vs. Indiana, Chicago and the Nets - the latter pair are two of six games the Knicks play the final month against teams with losing records.

Of course, the Knicks also own one (26-36) because not only of games such as the last two, but also similar winnable games they've let get away on the road (i.e. Sacramento, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington).

"We've had games that we should've won and we just came apart at the end when we made a mistake here, a mistake there that cost us the game," Williams said. "You can't do that on the road. Everything, especially down the stretch, has to be perfect. If it's not, then you give the home team a chance to win and most of the time the home team normally comes up with victories."

"We have to be the aggressor on the road," Crawford said.

Even tonight, against an Atlanta team that took the Pistons to overtime Monday and the Knicks needed overtime and a last-second Crawford three to beat on their last visit, Nov. 30. Still, the Hawks have lost 16 of their past 17 games.

So if it's turmoil the Knicks need to exploit to avoid spending their final playoff life, tonight's a place they can start.

unreal the luck this team has. without 3 of their 5 starters, and they still have the 6th seed in the east.

i really believe at full strength (which never happens for them) they are as good, or maybe even better than the spurs.

plus the addition of dale davis has been hugh. the guy had 6 points 16 rebounds and 3 blocks last night.

maybe stern will feel bad, and give the pacers back artest for the play-offs.

and o'neal might be back for the play-offs, and i believe tinsley will still get back in the regular season.

have them at 22.5 to 1 to win the east for a k, so maybe just wishful thinking.
