Question for "sharps"

How long did it take before you considered yourself a true "sharp," if there is such a thing? I ask this because I read another post in detail, where one poster had a humble post saying "we all used to be squares." Another poster was talking about "squares, square sharps, and true sharps." I wasn't aware that you had to be one of the three. But this poster has a particular disdain and arrogance towards squares like myself. I ask this question kind of with a mocking smile on my face, because the whole "sharp" classification seems very important to certain posters. But I also ask, because I really would like to know how long it takes to "get it." I've learned a lot in my 3 years of betting, but I'm still a square.

And so it goes......

Illini- You have to understand, there are different levels of SHARPS.......by what they know, how much they wager, what they know in all facets of the gambling arena, etc., etc.

Sharps very seldom take anything the WORST of it the VAST majority of the time.......whether it be in the sportsbetting arena, video poker trenches, slot play trenches, blackjack, or other BEATABLE game.

I know this didnt answer your question, just giving food for thought.

I think you need to be able to tell, or judge, what is a sharp, or a square first. Personally if someone called me a square or a sharp I really do not care. Here is one for you, A square is a person who does not like being called one.

Fish- I obviously wasn't referring to you as the arrogant poster. But now that I think about it, I remember you posting "why doesn't everyone just retire and gamble?" I personally couldn't think about doing such a thing right now, but would love to not have to work. Give me a road map on how to get there.

Illini, being sharp is not what it is made out to be. It is alot of hard work and even though you can say "well, i get to sit home all day and work doing something I love", there will be days which you will contemplate suicide. It's not all that. You have to live it for the most part to be among the cream of the crop. You lose valuable time just by going to take a dump sometimes. I am no pro. I am midstream somewhere. I am not in a position for the work ethic it must take to be a serious sharp. Some people just sit all day starring at the screen looking for moves and consider themselves being sharp. It's not all it is made to be, unless you enjoy the fight and are actually making money to live happily on. Some can, most cannot.

OF- I hear ya. Results are all that matters. It just seems funny to me how a few certain posters want to have a comma and "sharp" after their name. Like , B.A, M.S., or Phd.

after successfuly middling and scalping my way to a $12,000 profit...i had to meet with the other sharps in a secret location. at this meeting, a photo of billy walters was set on fire and i held it in my hand as it burned. i had to repeat over and over "may my soul burn in hell like this photo if i ever betray my friends".

afterwards, we all went out for a steak dinner. as is tradition, i had to pick up the tab.

btw, i am kidding. it was posted in a thread a long time ago that sharps are born, not made. since i was the biggest square on the planet until i found this place...the best i can ever hope to be is an "educated square". i have come to accept this limitation.

That is a cool quote blue and I applaud your honesty and ability to see the most likely scenerio. I have a plan to someday try my hand at being a pro gambler. When the time is right, I will know. Lots of work to be done still for me. I may die 1st. I'll enjoy today though. :drink:

Bottom line: did you cash or not? Would rather cash as a square, than lose as a sharp anytime. I think, experienced is better than sharp. To me veteran vs. novice is a much more accurate description. No one starts as a veteran. But you could remain a novice for an awful long time if you do not learn and grow from experience. Probably the biggest problem I have with the square/sharp debate is the negative tag associated with being square. It implies you are a fool. Where as a novice is just new and inexperienced. In this business, it is a baptism under fire. Hopefully you take more steps forward and less steps backwards.

Illini,

I wouldn't concern myself with these labels if I were you. Winning $$$ is the goal and if you can do that, then it doesn't matter who thinks you're sharp and who doesn't.

Also, I second what OF said above. GL :103631605

dont we wish it was that easy.. i'm sure that road had a lot of wrong turns along the way.. and youre asking someone with decades of experience.

i'll bet you will know a hell of a lot more 10 years from now..

I don't agree with that. One can be a veteran, and still a lousy losing bettor, while another can be winner from Day 1, or I sppose Day 2. Experience and success may have some correlation, but not always.

Guys, I understand and agree with you. And I really have no desire for other people to think I'm a "sharp." I probably never will be anyway. I just think it's funny how that one poster constantly reminds us in every post that he's a sharp. Better know who you're dealing with you freaking morons, cause I'm ______, M.S., Sharp, Phd., Jr.

On the other hand, I have a lot of respect for people like Fish and D2Bets, who just sit at their computer and make money, and just "get it." And for those posters, I am curious how many years it took them to get to the point where they could almost print money from their computers. They all started out as just sports fans like most of us, I'm sure.

They do not print money Illini. They grind away at profits. It is not as easy as you are thinking. They have to do the work. We have to learn the job first. Then maybe we decide to do the work also.

If your withdrawls are bigger than your deposits you are sharp. End of story...

I have been a sharp, by the definitions listed in another thread, from the first play I made online.
