First things first:

Steroids are simply an agent that accelerates healing.

When you work out, your muscles break down and you need to rest to let them recover. Steroids simply speeds up that recovery and allows you to work out again and again and again.

NOW

Once Bonds stops taking steroids (and assuming he has), his healing process for bodily aches and pains will be that of a 41 year old. He just had knee surgery. He simply won't heal. His career is over.

I had predicted this 2 months ago, and I feel that Bonds will not hit another HR in his life. What I heard today simply validates my hypothesis.

I saw this coming as well. I don't think he's hurt that bad; I think he could play. He just doesn't want to because when his HR total goes way down then the proof of his steroid use will be irrefutable.

I think the knee thing works into his undermining hands. Anyone with half a brain can see him working; "suspending" himself voluntarily for a year, devising a premise that can eventual lead to him coming thru with an admission of the 'roids after a patsy or series of court scenarios runs its courses, and then come back "forgiven and a fair slate" in '06 to try and at least surpass the milestones on his so called "fair grounds." The guy will dupe his fans and brethren with this sitting out a year ordeal, and maybe a few of his nay-sayers, but just reading into his commentary since the beginning of spring training and today, one can tell that he knows he's doomed and looking at a bubbly cauldron if he tries to go into '05 with a "clear" conscious. If he still runs into bad episode after bad episode, the guilt may be too overbearing and he could hang 'em up for good, knowing that any huge milestone will be shrugged off by the general consensus.

he will be remembered as an unlikeable, cheating quitter who never won a title.

He will be remembered as the greatest player to ever play the game with or without steroids. The guy walked 232 times last season. You might not like his arrogant attitude but the man was a superstar and I hope I get to see him play again. Character is a seperate issue.

without steriods, how many of his homeruns would have been flyouts? 10%? 25%?

how many games would he have missed throughout his carreer? he missed a bunch on the juice...would his carreer have been over before his 2001 record breaking season if he wasn't on roids?

we will never know.

and, character is NOT a seperate issue. not in this case. he cheated...as a result, his stats are worthless.

by the way, the same goes for canseco and mcgwire. all those guys should be wiped from the record books. they take away an olympian's medals if he is doped...why should these guys keep anything?

agree, and wouldn't be a little bit of justice if Bonds could not play and had to stay in 3rd place with his tainted HR record? I remember Aaron passing Ruth when I was a youngster and I didn't like it - not a racial thing - I was only 9 - but because I loved stats and thought, geez Aaron has so many more at bats etc. But now I appreciate guys who have the longevity, as well as the production, and I really wouldn't want to see Bonds getting undue credit for either.

blue:

Canseco and McGwire took steroids when it was legal to do so. Governor Arnold described it as being similar to a pole vaulter having a fiberglass pole compared to a steel one. In other words, there will always be improvements in the game whether it be an increased exercise regiment, better equipment or just better nutrition. Each of these things can add to an athlete's performance giving that athlete an advantage over previous athletes.

However, this doesn't mean this whole steroids issue is ok. I put the blame on baseball for allowing dangerous drugs to be legally used which made these seem acceptable to high school kids. Canseco and McGwire were just as guilty for this reason as well.

Sorry if I seem to be flip-flopping here. What I'm trying to get at is don't blame Canseco and McGwire for having an advantage over past baseball players. There will always be advantages. If you must place the blame on these guys it is for serving as poor examples by making steroids seem acceptable.
