Last night, during the Memphis-Vandy game, a weird play happened. Memphis guy had the ball, and sprained his ankle or twisted his knee or something. He was in immediate pain, and traveled with the ball, taking 4 steps without dribbling. Ref stopped the game, but gave the ball to Memphis, in effect stopping the play before the travel. I figured that they had to call traveling, regardless of the injury, and give the ball to Vandy. The announcers didn't say anything, and I kept thinking to myself that this could not be right. Next dead ball, Kevin Stallings, the Vandy coach, was arguing with the ref, and I'm sure it was about that call. Ref screwed up, right? Cause it wasn't like he was injured and let it be known before traveling. He just pivoted, sprained the knee or whatever, and started skipping on one foot in pain. Seems irrelevant that the travel was caused by injury.

didn't see the play so i can't comment on it directly

but if i see someone have the ball in their possession, and if no one is around him, and i can clearly see he is injured and then travels because of it, odds are i'd probably call time as well and let his team keep the ball

if he was being "pressed" or threw the ball away i'd probably give the ball to the other team, but in this case, i, too, probably would have allowed memphis to keep the ball

one thing i consider, as well as all refs, is "advantage". did memphis gain an advantage because of this play? probably not. it's just like at times i'll be positioned under the basket. the ball will be out by the top of the key and i see one of the pffensive players push a defender out of the way on a shot attempt. unless it is truly flagrant or blatant, i will let it go if the ball goes in the basket or if the rebound bounces some other way because that push had no impact on the play. however - if the ball lands right in the hands of the player who pushed the defender out of the way - THEN i will call a foul - and this almost always gets some lip from the coach for i call a push off foul - and he never saw it because it didn't happen on the rebound - but 3 seconds earlier before the shot when i was the only one who saw the play, but in this case i simply stored it in memory and called it when it needed to be called. same thing goes for giving a coach a "T". if a team has a breakaway for a layup and the other coach says/does something to get a "T" i won't call it right away for if I call it while the other team is going for a breakaway layup i penalize the team with the ball and reward the defensive team. in this case, i'll let the kid lay the ball in and as soon as he does - THEN i will "T" the coach.
