Hey guys I'm headed to a Sushi bar (I've never had it) this weekend and needed some help on what to order. I don't like a real fishy taste, but I love cooked lobster, shrimp, scallops, snapper, trout, but I hate salmon (just trying to give you guys an idea of my tastes).

Got any tips for me guys?

You don't have to get anything with raw fish, although you should at least try it.

California rolls are a combination of vegetables and rice, so no worries. Anything with eel, smoked salmon or shrimp will be cooked.

If you try one piece of raw fish, get a "tuna hand-roll". Even normal people eat raw tuna (ever had Tuna-Mahi?)

Last suggestion... Get miso soup as an appetizer. No sushi experience is complete without it.

Try the CALIFORNIA ROLL as a prelude.........all veggies.

Use soy sauce!

Try some that have WHITE FISH, they are very good imo.

The salmon I love, but you stated you do not like that.

Any of the Shrimp you will like tremendously.

Along with the soy sauce, make sure you add a little ginger to your plate..........very good for you.

Again, try the WHITE FISH or the tuna..........both good choices.

Actually the California Roll has cooked crab in it. I also like the spicy tuna rolls. I'm not sure if it's cooked but with the spices you can't tell the difference.

You will get a small dish. This is for soy sauce. You can dip your sushi in the soy sauce for flavoring.

You also will get pickled ginger (the pinkish stuff) and wassabe (the green stuff). Try the pickled ginger. The wassabe is like horse radish and is very potent. If you are going to try some just try an amount equal to the size of a match head. Some people put a little bit of wassabe in the soy sauce for dipping but I like a little wassabe on the sushi itself.

Enjoy!

My advise, be adventusome (I love sushi).

But just in case you don't like the sushi
Appetizer suggestions:
* Beef Negamaki (cooked beef and scallions, with a sweet suace)
* Vegatble Tempura (some places let you order by the piece, the Yams, Sweet Potatoe, or even Pumpkin turn out fantastic)

Sushi:
Eel (it is cooked, either fresh water or sea water)
Flying Fish eggs (its caviar, for a real treat put a raw quail egg on top)
Tuna (I would order at least 1 piece of the belly tuna, usually listed as market price)
Cooked Shrimp is ok, but get the sweet shrimp (it is raw, yummy)

gott a go back to work

Sea Urchin can be very good as well, bt only at an upscale restaurant

No matter what you do, don't order any item that includes salmon roe. I once went for a great sushi dinner, but all I could think about as I lay in bed that night was the texture of the eggs in my mouth...eventually I had to get up and hurl my brains out. Other than that, if you use enough wasabi, everything tastes the same. I recommend the alaskan crab roll if they have it.

GO to a chinese buffet that has a variety of sushi/sashimi available, then you can try just about everything.

There are two decent places here in Tampa: Todai a nationwide chain that has quite variety an exclusivly sushi based buffet, also the crazy buffet here also usually has over 25 types of sushi to choose from at most times, I'd sugest both to start. Many chinese buffets have sushi available too but not quite of the variety or quality.

AT THESE PLACES I CAN USUALLY COMSUME ABOUT 50 dollars of street value (in a restaurant) sushi compared to ordering at a restaurant.

After trying one of these places out you'd be ready to belly up at the 'bar' at your local sushi restaurant. My favorite is the SPIDER roll.

Be advised that the egg (it is sweet) is a "desert" sushi and should be the last piece consumed.

If you want to get hammered, drink sakki, but do not mix it with beer. Beer is acceptable when eating sushi.
